yeah pasta's a good idea. simple and easy.
You could also try something with pastry or how about tortilla wraps?
Like for example you could make bologneisse and guacomal and lettuce and put that in a wrap or i dunno.
search online for recipies like that.
As for desert what about trifle easy, cheap and yummm!!!

you could try crapes( you know the watered down pan cakes) for dessert and serve them with something like home made ice cream. search google.

maybe a baked pasta dish with tomato sauce and cheese with a bell pepper and some onion. with a little salad, if your store sells gourmet or spring greens in bulk you'll only need about an ounce per guest so it should help your budget. Buy a box of pudding mix and top with a water caramel sauce which is made from sugar and water
