Have a "roast" at his party !.!. get all his friends & family tell stories about him!. This can get funny!.
Have someone stop the whole party - and walk up to him and sing "Happy Birthday" just to him !.!.!. you can make this funny, serious !.!. or even embarrassing (but nice)!.
Turn out the lights !.!. and have him a huge birthday cake brought out by folks !.!. on the cake have 30 candles that won't blow out when he tries to blow them out!.

my bf is also turning 30 this upcoming June!.
I've started contacting his friends/co-workers to have a surprise party thrown for him at the local cheesecake factory restaurant where we live!. I set a time and i'm having everyone show up and be seated prior to us arriving!.
he's going to be totally thrown off guard-i'm also asking his best friend to fly in from Indiana, another college friend to come from his homestate of IL, and his parents who also live in IL!.
I can't wait to see his face when all of his family is there-it will be great!!!
