1st birthday party...need characters!?
My son will soon be 1 year old and I want his first party to consist of the characters he enjoys such as sesame street, teletubbies, Kipper the Dog, Star (from the SPROUT channel), Curious George, etc. But I want to know if anyone knows of a website where I can hire a person to come in dressed as one of these characters for a few hours so he and his friends can see them "in person" and take birthday pictures. I've never hosted a birthday party before, as this is my first baby. I live in the Kansas City MO area and haven't the first clue as to where to go to hire people to dress up as a character....websites would be appreciated, or business numbers, but any suggestions are all accepted and very appreciated! thanks!

i don't have any family to attend his party...just my friends who have little kids ranging from 2-6. it's all i can get to attend his birthday.....

Don't live in the area, but I suggest contacting a local costume shoppe to see if they carry any of the character's costumes. Also, see if a friend or relative would be willing to dress up and make the "appearance".
Sometimes when the characters children see on tv (small) become larger than life (in person) it frightens them. You may not want to spend money on a hired character for children this age. If it becomes overhwhelming for the children and the "guest" has an abbreviated visit, you won't be out of the $$$ that you would have for the hired character.
Weekend rentals should run @ $25-$65 for the weekend-not including the deposit. Take in consideration the popularity of some of the characters and your locations-this will increase or decrease your cost.

Well, you might see if you could rent one or several of the characters from a local costume shop and maybe have your friends/family wear them for part of the party? It might be cheaper than hiring someone. My uncle always dresses up as Santa for my nephews at Christmas, and it's a lot of fun for the adults to know who's "really" behind the suit. It makes for great pictures and stories when they get older.
The idea might not be such a good idea for a one-year old. Just because your child likes the characters doesn't mean he'll love them in larger-than-life sized versions. As a matter of fact it might scare the crap out of him. Ever see a young child freak out at a place like Chuck E Cheese? Another thought, too, is that at this age your child will not remember the day and how "special" you've made it, so why bother? Really, are you doing this big extravaganza for him or to keep up with all the other Mom's who've had elaborate parties. I can't see making a big deal out of birthday parties until a child is old enough to appreciate it, enjoy it, and truly remember it. Birthday celebrations with my son were small family affairs until his 5th or 6th birthday and then we started having parties with his friends.

I wouldn't really bother with all that for a 1st birthday. Wait to do character parties after 3 years old. You will find it much easier to just have family and friends over and do a BBQ or something. A child that age wont know it's a party anyway..best to keep it simple.
