Answers:
FOOD.
everyone loves food

Get the Oriental Trading catalog or go to the online site and they have everything you would need for a luau party or any other party you may have.

Cut up coconuts and use them as cups. It will be quite a feat for you unless you have a power saw (I have done this), but a man should be able to do it with a large knife. My dad does it this way, but my husband can't. The juice inside is nice, but an aquired taste. But it still is a nice drinking utensil. If all else fails, buy some plastic ones! Oh, make sure they chop off a flat bottom too or else everyone has to carry their cup all day. I made this mistake once too : )

you can get some grass skirts and coconut bras some beachcomber hats. also maybe key chains shaped like a surfboard? Hibiscus tattoos...there are so many possiblities

Message in a bottle. I think you can get little plastic bottles from any arts and crafts stores. Put a little bit of sand in it, with a message. If it's your daughter's birthday, perhaps it can be a sweet message from her to the guests, like a thank you note of some sort. for an added touch, you can use crinkled paper or burn the paper at the corners, so it's like reading an old ancient message.

whip cream and cheeries and wine

We set up a "tacky tourist photo booth" at a luau we hosted a few years ago. It was a lot of fun and gave everyone a memento to remind them of the event.

Make a backdrop - we made palm trees out of balloons. Maybe a surfboard or something. Ooo! Maybe you could set up a surfing scene where guests can stand on a surfboard.

Fill an old trunk or suitcase with "props" - grass skirts, coconut bras, crazy Hawaiian shirts and hats, big sunglasses - and set it up near your backdrop. Borrow a Polaroid camera and have your guests get goofy in the scene and snap their photo.

You can print out photo folders on your computer - two per standard sheet of paper. Design the front with the name and date of your event and tape the photo inside. Viola! Instant memento!
