Depending on your music tastes it can vary. My personal taste for background music at a BBQ cookout is anything by Johnannes Linstead. It is fabulous, a mix of Spanish/Greek instrumental. Here is a site for him, give a listen.

If it's a Souther BBQ, bring on the Country Western Singers. A little hoedown or Bluegrass music can keep things lively, as long as you don't overpower your guests with the "twang".
