She is right, ask the family and close friends to bring a side dish or dessert. Then if i were you i would find a deli that sales fried chicken and order that for the main dish.have fun and let everyone contribute it will be good...
its good to have people bring something but you can have a sandwich platter and some chips, cookies, and pretzels. Or you could do a BBQ. Both are summery and good. If you serve the main meals you can ask your guests to all bring drinks and/or desserts.
Pot luck bad idea for ceremony like a christening. Catholics like pork it's cheap and there are a million ways to cook it inside and out. You can buy a boneless solid meat pork loin for about $25.00 and marinate it in a variety of ways slice it up and serve alot of different kinds of barbacue pork. It's a big giant two foot roast of meat and $25.00 buys enough to feed an army. Have some corn on the cob chopped into little four inch pieces and tater salad for sides. Dessert Coffee, cake and make your own ice cream sundae. Feed the whole clan for less than $100.00.
In my opinion, it depends on the type of family you have. If you have a close family and they don't think it is rude to call upon them for help, then you could ask them to bring side dishes and desserts and you provide the main meat but personally I would provide everything. You can make something simple like have trays of lunchmeats rolled up, cheese and crackers, fruit, desserts, coffee or tea.
If they want a meal, I would make maybe a brisket,
potato salad which can be made the day before and put in the fridge and a big pot of beans with some french bread, dessert( cakes) coffee and tea or lemonade
Or spaghetti, salad, corn on the cob with french bread, dessert, tea, coffee or lemonade.
Or different types of sandwiches, chips, dips, fruit, desserts, coffee, tea, lemonade.
These are just suggestions.
barq chicken potatoes salad
I would provide all of the food myself. What time of day is this going to be? If it is late morning to early afternoon, I would do brunch: bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, mini sandwiches, salad, some type of egg dish, pastries or donuts, and then cake later on.
I wouldn't have a pot luck, it's a christening not a summer party. You can have someone bring something if they ask, but I wouldn't ask my guests to bring something. When my god daugther was christened her parents had a cookout; it was nice. You could do something like that.
You could also bake a ham, serve it cold or room temp with rolls. Get a cheese tray to go with the ham. Make a pasta salad. Make potatoe or macaroni salad but make sure that you keep them cold because of the mayo. Hot baked beans are a summertime thing. Corn on the cob is always good in the summer. You can't go wrong with a tossed salad and different dressings. Good luck.
