A garden party in August with a 70's theme ..............?
ideas please for music, 70's food (got chicken in a basket!),
what was the hottest thing about 1976 apart from the weather?
Answers:
I agree with Elizabeth about the fondue...HUGE in the 70's...I asked my mom, as I only would've been about 4 years old in 1976...LOL!
As for music, try to find an old, functional record player and some records...ABBA, Chicago, Billy Joel Turnstiles record, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Captain and Tennille, Some K-tel conglomeration records (Also huge in the 1970's)...keep the music subtle so as not to interfere with the atmosphere of the party...
I would also have some nostalgia snacks, like bowls of classic 70's candies around...razzles, sweet tarts, etc...
you could make this cute cake, which I've included the link for

look for some 70's decorating books or home ec text books from the 1970's for inspiration, the latter will probably include recipes and other decorating ideas from the 1970's...
also scour yardsales for 70's type dishes in tones of gold, avocado and rust...as well as the blue and white corning ware casserole dishes...huge in the 1970's...you can also probably find some really snazzy 70's style ceramic ornaments for a centerpiece, of sorts...table clothes in 70's colours often turn up at yardsales...
a crock pot full of party meatballs, screams 1970's...serve with toothpicks...see if you can find a vintage crockpot at a yardsale or on eBay...I have one in harvest gold, classic!
I would use flowers in tones of yellow, gold, rust etc...

and my mum and older sisters...they are 70's relics...LOL!
1976 was the Bi-Centennial of the USA so lots of parties that year featured "Founding Fathers" themes. 1976 was also the beginning of the Disco era and lots and lots of roller skating. Bay City Rollers was popular but I don't know if you'll find much from the band. The movie Car Wash was very popular because of the music as much as the actors in it. Barry Manilow sang "I Write the Songs" and was very popular, too. Here's an addy for a good list of the songs that year:

As for fashion - bell bottoms for both guys and girls (since those terms were still ok then), vests, beads, beards on men and Farah Fawcett hair on women (that meant layered, curly and long if you've never seen her back then) and the mini skirt was still in fashion, too.
Fondue Pots were the thing that year, too. Not much in the way of "new" foods. The microwave wasn't around then so if you wanted to "party" then it was fast food brought in - frequently pizza and drinks. Seven layered salad was popular and here's a recipe for it:

Hope you have a fun party.
