Dinner guest?

my husband's boss is in from Chicago and we would like to invite him to our home for dinner. any interesting or different dinners that you could suggest? how about a recipe or 2, as well!! thanks! Mair


Answers:
It is difficult to suggest something with out knowing your guests likes and dislikes.
The others are right about doing anything fancy, if he wants that he can have it at a restaurant.
If you have the time to experiment with a new recipe go for it, your husband and yourself can eat it at another time.

I don't see much of Americans eating savoury pies, so I will give you my recipe.

Chicken Pie (Lazy Man Version)
Buy 1 kg at the Supermarket Deli bar Shredded Chicken
Slice a large onion into rings or crescents and soften in oil in a fry pan.
Sift over some plain white flour and stir over med/low heat for a couple of minutes and stir in some milk until you have a fairly thick sauce.
Add shredded chicken and combine. Turn off heat and let the sauce cool and the chicken warm.
In the mean time line a greased pie dish with a sheet of puff pastry.

Once the chicken mix has cooled 2/3 rds fill the pie dish
Cover with another piece of pastry trim edges and brush with milk. Spear the top with the tip of a knife to create steam vent.
Place in a preheated oven 160C for 30-40 minutes until the top is browned nicely.
Remove and place on a wire rack to cool.

A teaspoon of curry powder added with the flour would be great.

I would not try something new on the boss. Make what you do best and causes the least stress. Go to Marshall's or another discount store and score some new placemats and spend your creative energy on the table. Have a great dinner.

i agree with Z town.. do what you know, now is not the time to try something new.

and don't serve anything that's messy.. no finger foods, no bbq foods, no lobster..

I would stick with what you know and what you do well. When traveling, a classic home cooked meal is most appreciated. If you want to go upscale or fancy - you might as well go to a restaurant.

My grandmother tells horror stories of when my grandfather would bring colleagues home for dinner and if she tried something new it almost always failed.

try a little fettucine with primeavera sauce shrimp and carrots and peas or u can use chicken instead
with cresants
or
rice with chicken and broccoli stirfry with soy sauce

Whenever I have people for dinner from out of town or out of the country, I serve something they're not familiar with, or something that's typically indigenous to my area. This way it's sure to be unusual to them. And I think that's the fun of traveling, tasting that particular part of the world your in.

So not knowing where you live I can't recommend. But, I live on the coast in the Garden state. So what I serve depends on the season. What fish are being caught, what vegetables are being harvested. I would feature your local fare with out adding a lot. Simple is best. And tell your guest how you considered the menu carefully in order for him to enjoy your local cuisine. Once you decide, research the best wines to accompany your menu. And don't forget dessert, coffee, and a liqueur. In my experience traveling businessmen enjoy their cocktails. Good luck.

SHRIMP PASTA: A fast, healthy dinner--sauteed shrimp with olive oil and garlic. Serve with pasta and fresh grated Parmesan cheese.Ingredients:
? 1 to 1 1/2 lbs shrimp, cleaned and deveined
? Seasoned bread crumbs
? Extra virgin olive oil
? 5-6 cloves fresh minced garlic
? 1 lb spaghetti or fettuccine
? Fresh grated Parmesan cheese

Method:
Rinse shrimp and toss in bread crumbs. Boil pot of salted water for pasta, add pasta and cook until al dente. Heat olive oil in skillet, (just enough to cover the bottom of pan), add shrimp and heat over medium flame. Add minced garlic to shrimp. When bottom of shrimp turns pink, use tongs and turn to other side, mixing garlic in the skillet to flavor the shrimp and oil. Drain pasta and toss with Parmesan. Add contents of skillet to pasta and toss. You may add more olive oil and Parmesan cheese to taste.
Notes:
Adjust Parmesan cheese to your individual taste. Serve with warm Italian bread.

CHICKEN SALAD: You can prepare the homemade blue cheese salad dressing up to two weeks in advance. Keep it covered in the refrigerator.Ingredients:
? 2 cups buttermilk
? 1 cup crumbled blue cheese
? 1 cup diary sour cream
? 1/4 cup mayonaise
? 1/4 cup Djon-style mustard
? 1 tablespoon lemon juice
? 2 to 3 cloves garlic, chopped
? Black pepper to taste
? 8 slices bacon
? 1 cup chopped pecans
? 3 to 4 cups torn romaine, arugula, and/or spinach
? 1 cup finely chopped apple
? 2 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cooked and sliced
? 1/2 of a small red onion, thinly sliced
? Crumbled blue cheese (optional)

Method:
For dressing, combine buttermilk, blue cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, and garlic in a blender. Cover and blend until smooth. Season to taste with pepper. Set dressing aside. Cook bacon in a skillet over medium heat. Drain on paper towels, reserving 2 tablespoons drippings in skillet. Add pecans to skillet; saute pecans until toasted. In a large bowl toss romaine with toasted pecans, crumbled bacon, and apple; divide among four dinner plates. Arrange chicken slices on top of each salad. Top each salad with onion and, if desired, blue cheese. Serve with dressing.
Notes:
All the ingredient amounts in both the salad and the dressing can be adjusted according to taste. Great served with cornbread!

Ok, I would probably make it casual so that he doesn't feel awkward, or so you don't feel awkward. Have hamburgers, steak, and potatoes. Or if you want to be fancier you could have fish like lobster, shrimp, or clams!

I Am Starving Now!

I would suggest that you keep it simple yet classy. Prime rib roast is very easy to make in the oven. With it make some mashed potatoes and what ever veggie is in season. For dessert have some mixed berry crumble and vanilla ice cream. check out allrecipes.com for an excellent prime rib recipe!
