AJM,
Let me first say that it is a wonderful thing that you are doing for your mother. You have been given some interesting ideas, the ones involvong your moms friends are key. With that I add that you also involve whatever your mother may enjoy doing. Sure, she has graduated as a nurse... Believe me, we need more compassionate nurses.... but, what is her passion? Is she an artist? a thrill seeker? a golfer?
The reason for the questions? Base your party around something she is really passionate about... Lets say she liked working with the homeless for instance, you could for a fund raising style dinner/gala with your mothers name ... and donate the proceeds to your local shelter... Just a thought.. imagine the "Your Moms Name here" Cares Foundation. Something that everyone can participate in annually.... Something she would truly never forget. Whatever it is.... make it something about her... It is her day...
Good luck...

You should invite friends and family, what's a party w/o the people!!!

my mom graduated as a nicu nurse and we went out 4 dinner then went to the graduation then opened presents then go stay at a 5 star hotel!!!

Female stippers always work well at my parties...does you mom have a liquer licensence (AKA lick-her-license),,,,strippers always make party GRRRRRRREAT!

Have a themed party, and base all decorations, music, etc around that. Try to think of anyone and everyone that you think has really helped her along the way in terms of getting her nursing degree and invite them to the surprise party. Get a huge banner that says "Congrats" or something and have everyone write little messages on it for her..it can be a little token that she can keep with her that will remind her of her recent achievements.

get everyone to submit a story about how someone (a nurse and/or a mom) once cared for them in a special way, and put it together in a book for her to keep. Nursing is such hard work, so it would be nice to have some encouraging notes to read when things get tough.

How about a M*A*S*H theme?

Don’t do all of the work yourself. Get your mom’s friends and family to chip-in and make homemade food, drinks, and decorations. The idea is to get everyone to participate and make it personal. In the end, friends and family are the most important parts, anyhow. Don’t spend too much money, either. It’s the personal cooking and homemade presents that are really special. (That’s not to say that a coupon for the local day-spa wouldn’t be appreciated *g*.)

you could always go w/ the cheesy decorations that they have out now for high school grads. make it silly. and i did have a friend that had a uniform burning party when she finished nursing school - to burn the awful school issued uniform she had to wear for clinicals and all her unwanted notebooks, etc. she had several friends from nursing school over and they all did it together, then roasted marshmallows over the flames!

A suggestion that might help with making you mum feel special:
Foe my mother's 50th birthday party we had all the guest come prepared to speak. On the invitation we wrote.....
Come prepared to share "We love Helen becasuse........", it was a real hit as it gave people the chance to share their feelings and my mum was so overwhelmed by what people thought of her. It will forever be a special night for her.
We had a bit of an arabian nights these going and used pink and gold decorations, plenty of candles and a lovely catered dinner for all.
Enjoy your night. I am sure your mum will appreciate the gesture whatever you decide.
