How much food do you put on a buffet?!

Question:

How much food do you put on a buffet?

I am throwing an engagement party and thinking of self catering the buffet. There will be up to 100 people there I expect. How much food should I put on the buffet?!

Answers:
allow 4-5oz of meat pp
4-6 apps per person
veggie and starch
1/2 c rice pp
2 oz potato pp
3 oz veggies pp

Problem arises when you do not know who will eat what whem multiple options are presented so you have to allow for a run on one item. there will be leftovers no way around it

It depends on if there are any really fat people. Because they might eat like a rotisserie chicken and a pan of mashed potatoes and about three of your guests. And maybe a third grade class.

Make a large green salad with different salad dressings, potato salad too, that should cover what most people eat at a buffet. I like getting deli meat and cheese trays. Then a dessert tray with cookies. Ask the gal behind the deli counter how many you will need. One usually covers a family group of 20 but at an engagement party people are going to be drinking more than eating take that under consideration.

Get someone to do it.

Self catering a buffet for 100 people might be quite difficult and time consuming. You have to assume that people will 1 cup of every side dish (that's 100 cups of salad and starch each). That's a lot! And at least 6 oz. of meat each. That's 600 oz. of meat or about 50 lbs. That doesn't include bread, fruit, or dessert.

well maybe about 5-10 at least.

Hi my freind wish u good luck with the event, when you choose a buffet this mean your trying to ease things up & try to save money & time at our catering company when we plan a buffet we always add a 20 portions more to avoid shortage of any certain items, my advise for u when you plan the buffet start by the utensiles(plates, knifes&forks...) than by appetizers all plated in platters with each platter serving more than 20 portions if you have 6 different appetizeres, Pastries should come after next or near the Hot food (number of peices for each item should be 3/4 the number of people in the case of hot food use the same rule as in apptz. Desserts if buffet should be mainly small pieces called (gateau soiree), 2 &half time the # of guests.

Tin Star does a wonderful inexpensive buffet for that many people....if you have one in your area you may look into it instead.

Depends what type of food you're serving. For meats they always say calculate 1/4 pound per person. For dessert pieces, about 1.5 pieces per person. Something to keep in mind with buffets- people take WAY more than they need and throw stuff away,so plan on extra.
