Looking for community picnic ideas?
I'm hosting a community picnic in July. Approx 50+ families w/ kiddos (ages <1 year to 10ish) at our house. Would greatly appreciate ideas on how to make this especially fun/memorable. We are providing the BBQ, beverages and fixin's and families will bring salads and desserts. It's on a Friday night 6-8ish pm. I would greatly appreciate your sharing your successful themes or activities for a family community picnic? (ones you've either attended, heard about or hosted yourself?) Tx-a-bunch!

okay... these will sound corny to adults... but as a kid... it was such a joy...
a race... take all the kids shoes, separate, put one in each pile a distance apart...(distance depends on age of kids) the race... run to the first pile of shoes... put on your one shoe... run to the second pile put on other shoe... first to the finish line wins...
the egg toss, pair up start 2 feet across from each other toss the egg back and forth gradually increasing the distance till only one team remains... it can get messy so make sure to have clean up supplies, and may want to do last if the yard is small...
3 leg race, wheel barrow race, love the old pie eating contest...(could use cupcakes or Twinkies) hands behind your back... and go... again this one can be messy...
water balloons can be a blast too... especially if the weather is quite warm...
oh and a pinata... kids love pinata
thanks for asking the question... i just flashed back to many years of summer parties... and am grinning as i type...
:-)
For the kids especially, do an easy scavenger hunt, like find a brown shoe, or a penny( these could even be the shoes off their feet or a penny in their pocket) and so on. We did these at camp. Always have some kind of music. You could also do fun games like twister, limbo, hula hoop contests. We Just had a luau at my college and they did a human bump bingo. This is where they have a bingo board about 5'Wx6'L( you can make yourself), and give each person (Usually requires about 25 people) different numbers, but they are not allowed to look at them. You call out the number and other players look at each others numbers, a teamwork effort. For prizes you can go to the nearest party store and find really cheap party prizes in bulk. Hope this helps...Have Fun!!

line up all the couch cushions like a staircase and see who can climb to the tallest "stair" w/out falling on their rear end. Also, get a BIG roll of butcher paper, make like a red carpet out of it, give everyone a section & tell them to have a blast w/ fingerpaints. Also, a hula hoop relay. A bunch of people line up (side by side)in 2 lines holding hands, and starting from the 1st person, a hula hoop gets passed along the line w/out letting go of hands(like shrugging & jumping). When it gets down to the end, the last person runs to the front of the line and it starts over. The 1st team to have their 1st person reach the end of the line by this sequence wins. Also, a spin on hide n seek called skunk in the barnyard. it's played the same as hide n seek, except there's 2 "its", starting at opposite ends of a big area, & when the people hide, they count to 10, pop up, yell "skunk in the barnyard" & run to a different hiding place. The last person standing is the "skunk in the barnyard"
Also, ameba tag. It's played just like tag but theres no it & when someone catches someone they hang on to their hand & eventually form a huge chain. Another thing is, Ive never really had a formal name for it, but you blow up a bunch of balloons & put a paper in each one with a funny instruction, like, "drink a babys bottle" or "sing your favourite song backwards" or "eat a pickle with peanut butter on it" or "kiss the dog", just funny stuff like that and people have to pop them with their hindquarters or squeezing or any method neccessary w/out using something sharp. For the little ones you could try animal tag. You dont tell everyone else what animal they are, but each kid is assigned a specific animal and the only way they're allowed to "tag" each other is by...say little johnny is assigned lion...noone else knows he's a lion, but the only way to "tag" another lion is to make the sound of a lion & listen for the same sound. Don't forget to take a BIG picture w/ everyone in it. then you can keep one for yourselves & scan it onto t-shirts to send to people who came. Oh, and another thing I just remembered...I dont know if this is really a game per se, but we simply call it "pink". you give each person a paper with a couple "buzz words" & 3 "catch phrases". All throughout the event, as they go about merriment & such, every time they hear one of their buzz words, they can ONLY respond with one of their catch phrases...for example, if one of my buzz words was water, then if someone asks me, "where's the water"...one of my catch phrases might be, "over by the penguins". Towards the end of the event, to get everyone in an even sort of mood and to end things on a smooth note(also maybe even to get the lil ones to sleep if its getting toward bedtime), you could have a storytelling...sure theres the old standby of reading out loud from a book, but why not try having whoever might know a story, just one of the ones theyve picked up along their travels or maybe something made up, sit in the middle of the group and just share their story. It really is a lot more meaningful than a lot of people might think.
ok so I know this was a lot to read, but I hope I helped. (=
