If you've already said you'd go, go for a few hours, and then go to the other one!. You can go to both, but you can't bail on someone if you've already said you'd be there!.

If you haven't yet said you'd go to one, then see below!.

Lying ("making excuses") is a really bad habit to get into, and not necessary in terms of etiquette (which is where this question should be posted)!. Etiquette is your friend here, as it says that you just need to say that you really appreciate being asked, and you're sorry you have to say "no," because you have other plans!. The more detail you give and the more elaborate the story, the more clear it is that you're lying!. It also is very easy to get caught in the lie!. Not necessary, and it's just a matter of putting on your big girl/boy pants and owning up to what you WANT to do, dealing internally with the discomfort you obviously feel for disappointing someone by not attending their function, and be assertive with them about your wishes!. That's what confident people do vs!. lying!.

If the person asks about your plans, they are ignorant, and you still don't have to break down and tell them, or lie!. Just say that you have something else you're doing, you've already said you'd be there, and repeat that you really appreciate their asking you, and you're sorry you can't come!. Then ask THEM a question about how the plans are coming for the party, and put the ball in their court to answer you!.

You never have to give details about why you're not attending a function!. All you have to do is be gracious and say yes, or no!. They're wrong for asking!. Learn to be assertive!. Don't lie!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just tell the person that you have already RSVP'd to another party and it would be rude not to go and then apologize that you will be unable to make it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would tell them I have already made prior arrangements / plans!. I'd also state how it would have been better if your party were another week - - maybe it is not too late for them to change their plans!.!.huh!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just say you promised to help a friend with a project or something!.

Making excuses are mean though xDWww@FoodAQ@Com
