It depends upon whether that party is having an open bar. If they are then they can expect gratuity from the hosts. If it isn't then yes they can expect tips per order.

YES!! And that is where they make their money. The guy in charge of catering such affairs certainly did not pay his bartenders enough, as usual. Tips are the way bartenders make bar tending worth while.

I think so. I had worked in restaurants and catering while going to school. Even when catering fancy private parties with big shot celebs attending the bartender still had a tip jar. (Granted it was made of crystal!)
A bartender should always be tipped, private party or otherwise.
Pulling a dollar out of your pocket isn't that huge a deal. However, leaving an impression with the bartender is a huge deal. By tipping, you will get better service - he/she will remember what you were drinking maybe even hook you up with extra liquor, pay attention to you first instead of the other 4 people waiting for his/her attention. You get the idea.
It's just proper ettiquette to tip a server in the US. If this is for another country then you need to look it up in a Rough Guide or Frommers!

I don't think it's appropriate. If you're hired for a private party, you should arrange your own fee and not expect the guests to tip you.

Expect...no. But they'll come rolling in anyway. I've always padded the glass with a few ones so people would get the hint. And I always thanked people. But then again, I worked for myself so nobody could tell me what to do.
