What is the etymology of the word Cocktail?!

Question:

What is the etymology of the word Cocktail?

Answers:
The best answer that I have seen comes from pre-revolutionary war times. The story goes that revolutionaries used to meet at a public house run by a sympathetic woman. In order to help these rebels, she invented a drink that she would serve to British loyalists. The drink would have a feather from a rooster as a decoration. Hence the drink became known as a cocktail.
