What should i take to my new mother in laws BBQ?
im goin to a bbq tomorrow night and i have no idea what to take!!! my husbands sister has 5 kids so i would prefer something with no onions or peppers or crap like that, but i dont know.
Answers:
Call her up tomorrow morning and find out if she needs you to pick up anything for her or see if she needs help. If she sounds hesitant yet says 'no' then show up an hour early, strap on an apron and say "Ok, what can I do?"
Happy Memorial Day!!
Baked beans.
You need to ask her what is needed. That way you won't duplicate.
why dont you offer to do dessert and do one for the adults like mud cake and one for the kids like cup cakes that way everyone is covered and you turn up with a course.
......take some corn cobs with butter and some garlic bread made from long french sticks wrapped in foil that you can put on the BBQ. And maybe some marinated prawns/shrimp.
My family always brings a pot of Spanish rice over to my dad's side which is 100% Itailian, they enjoy something difrent other then their usual pasta and meatballs, lol, bring somthing that you know how to prepare your self, anything homemade and cooked well will propbably be a treat to your in-laws
Your husband if.you are wise

Call your mom-in-law or, better yet, your sis-in-law and ask for a suggestion... Tell her you want to bring something the kids will enjoy... she'll appreciate the thought.
or make caramel krispies... they are always a hit and you'll be the new favorite aunt... I used to make these with my preschool kids and they would disappear before they set...
CARAMEL KRISPY MARSHMALLOWS
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 c. butter
1 bag (8 oz.) caramels
1 bag (10 1/2 oz.) large marshmallows
5 c. Rice Krispies
Melt caramels, butter and sweetened condensed milk in top of double boiler. Dip large marshmallows into mixture and roll in Rice Krispies. (Fun to do with kids.) (Try mixing all together for bars.) ....
I used round toothpicks to dip each marshmallow and then rolled them in the rice crispies... then set them on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper... You can throw the whole cookie sheet in the freezer to set.. Instead of caramels.... use two mcintosh toffee bars (unless that's a canadian thing) ... and don't bother with the double boiler thing, just melt the caramel, butter and milk in the microwave, stir, dip, roll, ENJOY!
Take an ice cold watermelon. it's a memorial day tradition here in the south.
You could get a big loaf of sweet hawaiian bread. Rip a hole in the middle and put a tub of spinich dip in the middle. People can rip at the bread and dip it. Or for the kids they can eat the bread as is.
Or Jello Jigglers! All kids like that its quick and easy. Use cookie cutters for fun shapes.
Or make fruit pizza! Google it to find tons of easy recipes for it.
My last favorite is good ol' trail mix. People can munch on it while they wait for the burgers and dog's to finish.
Try pakistani Resturants they do not use onion or green pepers etc. in their BBQ
Best BBQ in whole town.
check the source web site and check your state and citi for pakistani resturant.
Just call her up and ask her what she needs that way you won't duplicate what someone else has brought.
You don't say what she's serving or anyone else is bringing but potato or macaroni salad is always popular. I have even made it and left the chopped onion on the side for people who like it to add.
Alternatively, a Jello fruit salad is usually welcome.
This is liked by most
A large jello ( your choice of flavor)
A large cool whip ( thawed)
make jello according to directions
fold in cool whip
when set it makes 2 layers
or cupcakes..let the kids frost them at the BBQ
Ask if you can take a dessert...cupcakes can be fun and easy and will impress the kids. For an easy dish, I take cans of baked beans, place in a baking dish in a 350 degree oven, bake for at least an hour, and stir ever so often. Don't cover, you want to cook out some of the juice. If it were me, I would make both! Good Luck!
Take a big tray of cut-up fruit with caramel or vanilla yogurt dip. Orange sections, apple slices, kiwi slices, whole strawberries, melon slices, grapes, fresh blueberries, black or red raspberries, and any other thing you like.
Alternatively, mix softened cream cheese with mild salsa, refrigerate till chilled, and serve with tortilla chips. Everyone likes this.
You can never go wrong with a good potato salad- and if you don't have time to make one up your local grocery store should have one that is pre-made. Also, you can buy a couple of bell peppers, white onion and tomato- chop all well, put in a foil packet with butter and seasoning and throw on the grill or in the oven at 375 for about 15 minutes. Cheap, simple, YUMMY.
Kids love cold cuts (pick low fat ones like turkey etc), and she'll probably serve bread anyway so you won't need that. If not watermelon, how about a mixed fresh fruit salad! Easy to prep and food-safe for transport. Don't take it in a metal bowl though! Glass bowl is best, transfer salad mixture to a bowl just out of the freezer prior to the drive over to Mom's.
You cannot go wrong with a green bean casserole. It is very simple to make.
3 small cans of french cut green beans.(Drain)
1 can of cream of mushroom soup.
1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
Salt and pepper to taste.
1 can of dried onions.
Mix all ingredients except dried onions. Put in casserole dish and sprinkle dried onions on top.
Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
The kids who do not like onions will love it too.
If there's a menu try finding something on the menu that hasn't already been chosen. Or, you can just stick to the simpler stuff. Paper products, table cloths, drinks, you know things that every party can never have enough of. That way you can get a feel for what kind of seasonings that the rest of the family has. So, next BBQ you can WOW them. And you won't have to get your feelings hurt if your dish goes untouched.
What about steak. Put Tomato sauce, bbq sauce in a bowl and leave the steak in the bowl overnight with gladwrap on it. When you want to cook it - tastes great. You can try Egg salad or pasta salad. Just type in Google for the recepie. In australia we can buy sausages with garlic and crap like that as well.
Trust me on this one - been there, done that!! First of all, ask your new mother-in-law what you can bring to help out. Check with hubby to make sure you aren't making one of "her" usual dishes & whatever else you do, do NOT make anything that is considered her specialty. It will help your marriage, I know!!
A great hit for all ages is mini hot dogs. You get cocktail frankfurters and buffet rolls and make mini hot dogs. Kids and adults love them and there are never any left on the plate. They look cute, but different, and with a old favourite all mixed into one.
potato salad
corn on the cob
something for dessert like ice cream
homemade macaroni and cheese.kids love it,so do adults.or some kind of dip, like seven layer dip, with tortilla chips.and be sure to help with whatever your mom in law needs..:)
baked beans potatoes salad
Take your own lovely self. Talk to your husband......I'm sure he's been to many family events through the years and knows who has what specialty. Try not to out-do your MIL.
You can make several different dips and use red/yellow/green bell peppers as the "bowl",(the kids won't mind getting dip out of this "bowl", as they won't be eating the peppers, or a canteloupe 1/2 for a fruit dip "bowl".
Here's a dip that is always popular, and you can use a large fresh artichoke (hollowed out) as the bowl.
warm spinach artichoke dip
2 packages frozen spinach thawed and drained well .
3 packages cream cheese( leave out to soften)
1 cup romano cheese
1 cup adagio cheese
1 large jar artichokes mashed up
1 jar roasted red peppers (dice)(optional)
1 cup fat free half and half
in a large sauce pan add half and half, cheeses and cream cheese add 2 T garlick powder salt and pepper to taste and melt over low heat when all is melted add spinach roasted red peppers and artichoke hearts. continue to heat until all thick and bubbly serve w/ tortillia chips or sliced pita bread pieces.
