Throwing a surprise 50th birthday party?!

Question:

Throwing a surprise 50th birthday party?

..for my mother in law. We're thinking of doing a celestial theme since she's obsessed with astrology/moons & stars, etc. Anyone have any creative idea on what we can do for the food & drinks [ I would really like everything to go with the theme we've chosen]? Also, it will be a casual event, so anything too fancy won't do. Any suggestions are helpful, thanks :o)

Answers:
Many foods (veggies, sandwiches, crackers, cheese, etc) can be cut out in little crescent moons and stars. Either use cookie cutters or those little tiny canape ones (I have a set that I use for pie crusts). The cake can be a large decorated theme cake (Zodiac or moon and stars) or consider a whole bunch of decorated cupcakes.
Rename all of the drinks after things in the solar system or zodiac.

Decorate everything in dark blue and yellow/gold.
Whats your budget? If it's big, consider a local planetatium as the location. Or hire an astorlogist to create simple charts or readings for the guests throughout the evening.

I am planning a surprise 50th for my DH this October! Good Luck!

cake in your house?it is very nice.

AlwaysOverPacks has some great ideas! Once you set your budget, just check out someone who does charts and have her chart done. We had a celestial portrait done when my grand daughter was born. It was beautifully framed, and just laid out all the great things to come in her future.

Lots of places carry inexpensive moon & star type serving dishes for dips etc., A simple dark blue table cloth, with gold stamped stars would be nice. You can find star, moon, sun stamps and ink pads at any craft stores, even Target, Walmart, etc.. I'd use bright yellow/gold plastic dishes & cups for the guests. Don't forget the star fruit! Simple to use and inexpensive. Sounds like alot of fun...Good luck!

I would do something like Chinese take out and put it in celestial authentic Chinese boxes.
Drinks you can serve hot tea, jasmine tea, mango tea, chi tea, or mango lemonaid. Alcohol beverages unsure if you are looking for that but they make a wine that is astology in all kinds...ask your grocer.
Make some fortune cookies putting lil wishes in the cookie for your guest and you can even chocolate coat them w/ star sprinkle.
--Fortune Cookies Recipes
Ingredients:
1/2 cup flour
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 egg white
3 drops vanilla or almond extract
1 tablespoon water
10 romantic fortunes (typed or handwritten on thick-bond paper, cut into 1/2 inch wide and 2 inches long)
1/2 bar (12-ounce size) fine-quality chocolate, dark, milk or white, melted in a double boiler

Directions:

Heat oven to 300 degrees F. Combine dry ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add liquid ingredients and stir until the batter is smooth.

Grease a non-stick cookie sheet with butter or non-stick vegetable spray. Drop one level teaspoon of batter onto the cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes or until cookies begin to brown lightly.

Remove cookie sheet from oven and remove one cookie with a wide spatula. Quickly place a fortune in the center, fold in half and press against the rim of a bowl to form fortune cookie crescent shape. Continue to shape the remainder of cookies, returning them back to the oven for 2 minutes if they become brittle.

Cool and dip into melted chocolate, placing on waxed paper until the chocolate hardens. Wrap in plastic or waxed paper, or place in an airtight container. Can be made up to 24 hours in advance.
