stews are commonly served in the same type of dish or bowl you would serve a soup in.

Yes if cooking on the hob then a lid with a hole in (already manufactured this way) is the best option. If cooking in the oven then you don't need to have a lid with a hole in.

A crockpot with removable stoneware is great for stews. It can be plugged in until the last minute, and then the stoneware keeps its heat for quite some time.

Some of them come with "cozies" to wrap around them for keeping things warm for travel.
