Ask guests to dress in "costume". They will have a lot of fun with it! Have prizes!!
Definitely get a DJ that is around your age. He/she will understand the vibe you are going for. I did that for our 10 year reunion last year and the DJ graduated from a different school but the same year, so we had so much fun picking out what songs to play because it was a time in his life that was important to him too. It makes a difference!
If your party is in multiple rooms, you could do an 80's room and a 90's room. Stick with the neon colors, etc for the 80's. For the 90's you could make it a little more grunge - or gangsta rap.
Have a blast!!! You are turning 30 and have the right attitude about it. My next b-day will be 30 also, and all my friends are stressing about it, but I am not. I look forward to it - cuz, hey my 20's weren't all that great, so my 30's have got to be better! :)
Happy birthday and I hope your party is a success!!!
PS - watch VH1's I love the 80' and 90's and get some ideas too!
Anything by Madonna or Cindy Lauper
Acid wash--it's all about the acid wash.
I just went to a "hair-band" party and it was a blast - everyone had to dress up like poison, motley crue, vixen, etc...it was pretty funny! She had all that kind of music playing, and she had the guitar hero game going, plus karoake hooked up!
Be sure to serve brie cheese. Pesto too?
This might sound a little crazy but you can have a murder mystery party that takes place in the 80's or 90's. Im doing one taking place in the 1920's for my 25th. checkout http://www.dinnerandamurder.com/games/ki...
and you can checkout the forum, this is what convinced me to do it. I know it sounds kinda lame, but everyone I've invited so far seem excited or at least interested.
