Yes, a DJ is a very good choice. Plus, have some water activities like water balloon fights and tosses. Provide appetizers so the kids can just go up to the table and grab something fast instead of having to get a fork and a plate. Provide food like:
-Sushi
-Fruit platter
-Veggie platter
-Finger sandwiches
-Popcorn chicken
-Spring Rolls
-Meats and cheeses
-Chips and salsa
-Motzerella sticks
-Hot chicken wings
-Mini pizzas
-Sausages/Hotdogs (w/o the buns)
-Crackers and cheese
-Devilled eggs
-Garlic bread
-Meatballs
-Garlic shrimp
etc. etc
And for some desert:
-mini brownies
-cupcakes
-cookies
-Jello
-pudding
-chocolate strawberries
etc. etc

Maybe even have some snow cone machines or how we call it here in hawaii, SHAVE ICE. And have some "make your own" popcorn and cotton candy machine. The kids will have a blast!

Get a slip and slide and have a slip and slide area. If you have a DJ set up an out door dance floor. Have a limbo contest Boys vs Girls. Make sure you have a little lounge area set up so the kids can take a break and just hang out maybe have a PlayStation or something of the sort in there.
your idea is great but maybe mud restling or pudding too. a runway maybe only if can. if you did pudding people will like your daughter's birthday parties.
You could have everybody dress in a theme and have a theme party. You could have everybody make up their own dance and show it at your party then have it judged. It would be like So You Think You Can Dance.
