For my son's 1st b-day, same thing mostly adults. I made a huge collage of pictures & 1st year memorabilia & had that as the center of interest. The family loved looking at that. I had a huge fruit plate & finger sandwiches & different snack foods so we could all eat & talk. The gift giving was also a big event. Then, for the cake, my husband and the baby got covered in cake. We put a mat down & let them have fun! No games though, adults don't usually like that. Just visit & reflect on the baby's 1st year. The party wasn't very long either as the baby was ready to go home after all the excitement!

cake, music, board games- or you could make up a game for adults... like a question game (if some have babies/children) the questions could be about their child.

no clowns ... if i were 1 i'd be scared for my life ... but make it like a regular party just with a kiddy theme

what about cake

Adults = drink beer & eat pizza Watch the game.

Kids = eat cake & drink milk. Watch Barney

On my kids' first Birthday party's I always had 2 cakes, one for the guests and one for the b-day kid. That way the b-day kid could mess their cake up all they want, which hopefully was a bunch, cause that's fun !!! I just picked out what ever theme I was going to go by and that would reflect the little ones personality and do the decorations and party hats accordingly. We always just had a few close friends and family at our too. Take pictures, have snacks and one really cool thing, and I really wish I would have done this much more !! And that was to record their voice and the silly things they would say, or try to say !!! This is a really good thing to do as they grow . I know you can cam cord but its not the same thing as just recording their voice. What a memory ! Have balloons, have bubbles, have noise makers, just have fun and have everyone join in, even the adults, these times don't last long enough and they grow up so fast. I hope you all have fun and cherish one another !!

Two most important elements to a successful party...food and music. You can have a more adult theme with the food..and offer simple kids treats for the few kids. You can entertain just like you would for any adult gathering...
Offer lots of appetizers..alcohol optional since it is a !st birthday,
and a main dish...I usually make the kids food portable..finger foods and keep them down low and at a separate table so the kids can get their own. Fun skewers with chicken, pineapple and cheese, pigs in a blanket, chips, and veggies and fruit. Have goodie bags for the kids but you really dont need to spend any time on activities for them if you have toys or movies available for them to play..(probably in a separate room).
The adults will be more relaxed and enjoy the company of other adults.
Then just make a big deal at cake time..lots of pics!

Have an adult party that is designed for the adults to enjoy themselves. Your one year old will be happy with her own cake and chewing on a little wrapping paper. You know your friends and what they like. Don't be like those short-sighted parents who assumes the rest of the adult population is either A) just as excited about spending the evening watching their toddler smear cake on themselves as YOU are or B) a toddler at heart and truly enjoys wasting an entire evening/afternoon at an Elmo themed party.

I would limit it to people he knows. As the first party it might be best for it to be small and intmiate. Just a day of you and your family celebrating with him. Have is according to the schedule he is already on. That way you don't have a cranky baby.

have a potluck

I agree with another Yahooer in here. Make it more for the adults. Your baby won't know the difference anyway. Believe me NO adult is THAT excited about your party. I know it's harsh, but true. Make it better for them by having it at a restaurant or something so they can enjoy it. If it's at your house, sure decorate in the kiddie theme, but DON'T make the adults look at pictures, videos etc. Remember they all bought gifts---they want food and drink!!!
