Is there something we can do to make the smoke last longer?

A fog machine is the best way to go. It is designed to do exactly what you ask. In the hands of someone who knows how to use it the effect can be very dramatic.
It used to be you can only rent one from a theatrical supply shop, but now, you should be able to find one at a party supply store, and, considering the season, a big costume shop.
Because of the season, you'd better call around and reserve one NOW. Don't wait until the last minute.

skip the dry ice and buy / rent a fog machine
rent or buy a fog machine like dj's use. go to guitar center for an idea of costs.
use more ice
