What to make for a party?!
What to make for a party?
My mom is turning 39 and I am throwing her a bday party but I only have $60 left for food. What are some nice but cheap foods I can make or buy? Thanks
Answers:
Get a couple different kinds of individual candy. Get some chips and pretzels. Cut up some carrots, celery, and cucumbers and buy some ranch dressing or make a dip. Get a couple cheesballs and some crackers (you can get them for three or four bucks at Wal-Mart or Meijer). A great thing that can serve as the central dish is a nice fondue recipe. Get a couple loaves of French bread, cut them up, serve them with a fondue (I made one out of Velveeta and a couple cans of crab meat in a Crock Pot). It was cheap and everyone loved it. You can find easy recipes online. Another thing you might suggest is turnign the party into a pitch in so that the people who you are inviting bring some stuff. Make the cake at home, if y8ou ahven't already bought it and that will save money, or just make a bunch of cupcakes. If you shop at a store that like Wal-Mart or Meijer or Super Target, you will probably save a fair amount of money so you can buy more too.
a cake
A good old fashioned bbq with salad. Ask your guests to BYO drinks. It's standard practice here.
How many people ?
munchies! mak shu dat u be havin a joint despinsor!
Taco dip!!!
Equal parts sour cream/cream cheese and taco seasoning.
Mix it all together, add lettuce, shredded cheese and tomatoes if you like and serve with chips!! Cheap and makes a TON if you want it to and VERY good! :)
Well that depends....you could do something like make soup and have hotdogs....that wouldnt cost that much if you made the soup yourself.....
Of course you could do something like.....tuna salad, egg salad and chicken salad sandwichs, cut in quarters like little tea sandwichs....and have sliced veggies with it....and other small type foods.....tiny cupcakes or muffins...deviled eggs are cheap and easy to make....
You can probably serve a meal as cheap as you can appetizers. Think along the lines of Spaghetti or Lasagna, Garlic Bread, Green Salad, and bday cake for dessert. Or a "Build Your own Taco" bar and bday cake.
That is plenty you got to either buy or make for the party. Depend on what she likes....I would like a Summer Rolls with peanuts butter source myself. I am 39 turning 40 this year, you mean she has a daughter old enough to do all these things? I do not even have a kid~! I am crying now.......I am lonely and sad now.
A CAKE OR SOMETHING GOOD

A taco or nacho bar can be fun and inexpensive. I did this for my sister's 30th birthday and it was really fun.
You also might consider asking some family members to contribute. (for instance ask an aunt to bring tomatoes, a sibling to bring sour cream, etc...)
Meat
cheese
chips/tortillas
sour cream
tomatoes
refried beans
guacamole
etc...
Iced tea is super cheap and goes good with a summery gathering.
Trader Joe's is a great source for inexpensive party stuff.
Mediterranean foods are delicious & easy. You can make homemade humus, babaganoush, tabouli, falafel, etc... for next to nothing. A can of garbanzos, an eggplant, a box of tabouli & some falafel mix will go far. You'll need lemon, olive oil, garlic & not much else. Throw in some mini pitas, olives & crudites.
Trader Joe's has flatbread pizzas starting at $2.99 with really nice toppings.
Meats & cheeses will do you in cost wise so leave those out. How about deputizing a couple of good friends to bring one of their signature dishes each. They'd love to help you out & by bringing just one dish they realy have time to make something special.
Best of success with your mom's party. The two of you must have a really nice relationship for you to want to spend your hard earned money on throwing her such a nice & well thought out party. Have lots of fun & enjoy.
Go to Costco or Sams buy the large Lasagna (serves 10-12) so buy accordingly, buy their pre-packaged Caesar Salad. Buy Sourdough bread to make garlic bread. Save money by making your own cake or cakes.
Go to your local Sams or Costco and pick out some finger foods like:
cheese cake bites
bag(s) of cooked shrimp
couple of different types of cheeses
arrange for some sandwiches to be made then cut into finger food size or make them yourself
fruit: strawberries, cherries, raspberries, grapes
crackers
arrange in nice platter trays.
