Answers:
Having a luau party in the backyard sounds like a great idea!!! Think about Hawaiian colors and perhaps, instead of asking everyone to wear a "color", have them wear a Hawaiian inspired shirt or dress (for the girls). You can purchase paper leis for everyone and make "mock" mai tais or other fruity drinks such as "Blue Hawaii's", "Tiki Punch" and so on. I'd invest in some of those torches you can purchase at Cost Plus and some little white lights for when the sun goes down. Add some round tables, festive tableware, and some great food and you'll have a great time! And, don't forget the music, your favorites plus the sounds of Do Ho in the background. If you have it in your budget, hire some Hawaiian dancers for the evenings' entertainment and have hula lessons for your guests. For food:

1. Roast pork butt, shredded in a mango barbecue sauce, chicken teriyaki
2. "Hawaiian" rolls with sweet butter
3. Fruit kabobs with yogurt dipping sauce
4. Pineapple jasmine rice
5. Jicama, mandarin orange, and spinach salad with a raspberry vinagrette
6. Cupcakes, brownies, and macadamia nut cookies

Happy Birthday and have fun!

This time of year, the dollar or 99 cent stores sell leis and other luau items...you can pick up most of what you need without spending too much money.

Have water balloon tosses, limbo, hula dance contests or volleyball.
