What equipment do I need for a neighborhood cookout for about 50 people?!

Question:

What equipment do I need for a neighborhood cookout for about 50 people?

This is my first outdoor grill and I don't have a clue about coals, etc.I'm concerned about mosquitos too although I'll have it around 4 pm when the sun goes down. Any information is appreciated.

Answers:
Ask people to bring specific items potluck style, so you don't spend a lot of money. Also if people will be drinking, make sure they bring that too. If you are charcoal grillling, get lighter fluid and a charcoal starter ( a metal canister that you stuff newspaper in the bottom coals and light to get em started) Otherwise do propane, especially if you have a lot of people. Go out and buy things that don't cost a lot such as snacks, condiments, non-alcoholic drinks. Also if mosquitos are a concern, buy citronella candles and backyard torches, they will help. Also bug spray is always a good idea.

If you don't have any idea, having a cookout for 50 people is a huge undertaking. Get some friends to bring their grills and stuff and you buy the food.

do chilie, it's good, high in protien and easy to make. put lotsa meat and onions in it mmm, mmm, good. soda pop for kids///merlot for adults/next currie chkn/ spagetti...........paper plates and plastic tools. trash can with bag liner....

If you're going to have a cookout for 50 people, I would recommend you use a gas/propane grill. Coals are NOT going to last long enough to cook that much food.

I agree with Barbra. Feeding 50 people requires a tremendous amount of preparation and dishes.

Here's what I'd suggest:
-Crudité platter: carrots, celery, broccoli and cauliflower florets, grape tomatoes with a dip or two.
-Bread & cheese platters
Salad with a variety of dressings available
-Pasta salad, bean salad and/or rice pilaf type dishes

If there are any meat dishes that can be prepared ahead of time and served cold, you might want to consider those also to take the strain off the grill. You can't possibly have 50 steaks or whatever ready at the same time.

Consider sticking with a large variety of buffet style finger foods.

A very, very large grill. My backyard Webber can only handle a small torso. 50 people is gonna take forever to cook.
