What stops wedding pillars from sinking into the cake?!

Question:

What stops wedding pillars from sinking into the cake?

When making a teired wedding cake how do you do it so the cake doesn't get all mashed from the pillars?

Answers:
On each layer of the cake, wooden dowels are inserted to the exact height of the cake then cardboard cake circles are placed on top includin the next cake teir . Some cake tiers are built with the dowels and plates included. Regardless for each layer you must be structured with supports and boards. If every thing is not even well I am sure you have seen what happens. Splat. Try to build cake where it will stay.

cardboard between the bottoms of the pillars and the next layer.

They use skewers going right through the layers how ever many there may be and a base to hold each cake layer eg:cardboard discs.

Usually on large cakes, a cake round is placed on top of each layer and "frosted". The pillars are placed on top of the cake rounds (sometimes the rounds are notched to keep them in place) so that the pillars don't sink.

A lot of the time the pillars are threw the whole layer of cake. The upper layers have cardbord or glass that the cake rests on top of the pillars.

Each individual cake is placed on either a cardboard cake circle or a plastic cake plate. before one cake is placed on top of the other wooden dowels or straws are placed into the bottom tier -this supports the weight of the layer on top. There are also more advanced systems for weight distribution which are much more costly and usually used by the pros

In my wedding cake they put a piece of plastic or cardboard on top of the cake layer and covered over it with icing. I am sure that you can check at you local grocer that makes cakes...I am sure they can tell you....you may even go to a Michael's...they have stuff there.

they use the plastic trays and these wooden skewers. for more info on it go to wilton.com and it will show you exactly how it goes. good luck

there is cardboard under the cake rite so the pillars have feet on the bottom
