Answers:
"Midnight at the Oasis" was one of my favorite tunes by Maria Muldaur back in the 70's!. She later developed a series of nightclubs called "The Oasis Ballroom" and eateries!. Her music was inspirational! Anyway, here are some ideas based upon fond memories:

1!. Incorporate some green into your color scheme, perhaps shimmery fabrics!.
2!. Pillows on the floor, low tables, dimmed lighting, perhaps candles!.
3!. Greenery and white lights behind veils of material will offer an etherial feeling!.

Food:

Fingerfoods: roasted skewers of lamb, chicken, beef; hummus and pita; tomato and garbanzo bean salad with feta; fresh fruit cubes; herbed goat cheese, artisan crackers; gourmet olives, including kalamata; roasted lemon potatos; spanokopita; spinach in filo; moussaka; baklava!. Use pita bread, warmed, as your eating utensils!.

Drinks: white sangria; fruited iced tea; lemonade (hard)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm not sure of your friends tastes, but definately Meditteranean (!?) food is a must!. Northern African (Tunisian/Morrocan)!. It's easy, and delicious!. You would for sure need palm trees (cut outs) and maybe children's pools filled with water and put on top of black tarp that you would cover with sterile sand box sand (you can get it at Home Depot/Lowes)!. Lots of lanterns holding candles to emulate stars and maybe soft fans blowing to feel like the desert winds!. Lots of billowing cloth canapes overhead!. Bright colored cloths!. This sounds like your going to have a beautiful party!. I'm not sure where you live, but in the northeast near NYC we have a large Arab community (many of them actually) and they have wonderful stores, filled with fabrics and foods!. Good luckWww@FoodAQ@Com

my boyfriend's sister had an ALL ICE martini bar at her wedding - it was the coolest thing ever!. the drinks got chilled as they slid down the ice into these really fancy glasses!. now, i don't suggest getting a martini bar for 16 year olds - but I'll bet someone can do something similar with virgin drinks or a juice bar!. I'd look into it - I'll bet it'd be pretty original for a birthday party!. Good luck and happy birthday!Www@FoodAQ@Com
