Italian party ideas?!

Question: Italian party ideas!?
I'm not Italian, but I'd like to know - especially from those of true
Italian background - what type of parties did you have as
children!? Did you have any particular customs!? Dishes!?
Games!? Etc!? What says "Authentic" to you!? Thanks for the help!Www@FoodAQ@Com

As a true Italian and Sicilian, when it's anyone's Birthday or special event, the family and very, very close friends of the family gather and it's a big feast and celebration! The more food the better!

First, there's the antipasto, this is a dish filled with salami, supressata, prevalone cheese, olives, bread, Fennel, bread sticks, and any other Italian cheeses and cold cuts, prosciutto (!? spelling), etc

Then comes the main meal which starts with either soup or pasta, but it's usually a pasta dish like macorini or lasagna, shells, ziti, etc!. also at this time there's meatballs, etc!.

Then comes the main dish, this can be roast beef, turkey, pork, whatever meat is chosen and the side dishes which are vegetables like broccoli, and some corn, potatos, and even ALL of the above! There can also be more and there's salad!.

Bread and wine, and water are ALWAYS there from the antipasti to the dessert!.

Then comes the fruit!. This is whatever's in season, if it's fall and winter, it's apples, pears, etc, along with nuts!. Chestnuts, peanuts, etc!.

Then it's time to clean up before dessert and ONLY the women clean up, honesty if you live in a family that's old world like I do, we women clean up and the men sit around the table and talk or go to the livingroom and rest!.

After clean up is done it's time to prepare for dessert!. Usually it's Espresso and coffee, along with Italian cookies and pastries from an Italian bakery!.

Usually before an event someone goes to Arthur Ave!. (I live in NY) and that's the place to get all the good imported meats, fish, and pastries, and gets all the good imported cheese, cold cuts, and pastries and this is when those cookies and pastries are served!. If it's a birthday and not a holiday, then it's cake, pastries, and cookies!. Along with champagne wine, etc!.

Like for 4th of July we'll do a bbq, along with Italian food and those Italian pastries and cookies for dessert and of course, all the good Italian wine!. Those are a part of every gathering!

As children, it was the same kind of parties!. We ate what the adults ate and had the same parties!. The ONLY parties that were not like that were the ones we had with friends for kid parties!. Like when we had roller rink parties or things like that, those kind of parties were not done with the family though, they were done with friends and the big family gatherings with the feasts of good Italian food were done with family!.

If we did a party in a hall or restuarant, they were done the same way!. We had them in an Italian restuarant and my uncle ALWAYS goes to Arthur Ave!. and brings the cake and dessert in so that's done no matter where the party is! Otherwise, the menu is Italian food whether it's a caterer doing it, or a restuarant!. Others can order something off the menu if they don't like what we choose, that's always an option!. Food is always something that we always have tons of, and we'll always be flexible and if we don't have something someone wants we'll go and get it! That's just how it is and there's always room for more around the table we'll make room for them and if there's not enough food, we'll either make it or go and get some, there's always room for guests!

For games the only games that were ever played were among the adults and that's an Italian card game!. The kids weren't allowed to play, it was just for adults and there's always lots of cousins so we always played amongst ourselves, so it never bothered us that our parents were playing cards and we weren't there was always stuff for us to do!

As for dishes, there's always things that are going to be at certain gatherings!. There's always going to be an antipasti, there's always going to be Italian cookies and pastries, for Christmas there's always going to be Pisci Stocco, which is like Baccala, only different and there's a special cake that we have!. also, my mom had for Epiphany, she would give us a gift, being it's considered Little Christmas, she would give my sister and me a little gift every year as kids!. For Easter we always get HUGE chocolate eggs that area hollow, but have little toys at the bottom, (my dad gives them to the females no matter how old you are!), there's always Lasagna at Christmas day dinner!. There's always a head of the family, who's usually the oldest uncle and Aunt, or grandparents that are highly respected, they're the Matriarch and Patriarch of the family!. Church is very important!. I had a GREAT childhood and LOVE having the big family around me and all the traditions! It's the family and these traditions that says Authentic to me!. I love all the things my family did and having such a big family around growing up!. Now the family's not as big and some moved to different states, but we're all very close and it's the one thing that stands out to everyone that knows me and my family is that we are very, very close, but that's part of it, and it's great!

There's also different customs and traditions depending on what area you're from!. There's different areas of Italy, there's north and south and then there's Sicily!. My mom is from Northern Italy and my dad was born in Sicily so obviously, he's Sicilian, and all my aunts and uncles were born there and that's the dominant traditions that were we brought up with, and he is very old world, but different areas have different things that they may do!. It depends on those areas!.

I hope this helps and that you have a great party!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Italians like to gather their families around on special occasions, they usually eat their favorite dishes, whether it is pasta, risotto, eggplant lasgna, or meat, at long tables covered with nice showy tablecloths, sometimes in a garden, under a big tree!. Make it a very casual affair, treat everyone like a family member!. It is hard to explain but there are always children running all over, everything is very relaxed but conversation is lively!. Its a noisy rambunctious event!.

Hope it helpsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Jalizee wrote you a novel! Those foods, etc!. are for adult dinners and parties!. My kids parties were same as any other American kid would have!. Food, games and opening gifts!. We even had a pony for rides once!. Unually mother would have beef barbeque sandwiches or hot dogs on the grill, beans, mac!. salad, chips, then ice cream and cake!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
