Here is an idea my daughter and I have been playing with: spend a weekend with your friends painting "backdrops". City scenes, sunsets, farms, animals, beaches, whatever. Be sure to cut head holes if you paint bodys onto your backdrops. Put the different backdrops up, along with accompanying props (hats, funny clothes, stuffed animals, whatnot) and give each guest a disposable camera. Ask THEM to be your photographers for the day and tell them that you will be putting up copies of the pictures online somewhere so that they can access them later on.
After you have all of your pictures, invite your besties over for a follow up scrapbooking party.
Maybe I'm just a dork....but that sounds like fun to me! :)
Have a dress up event with the theme of 'ghosts and ghouls'. Have people dress up as something scary like a witch, vampire, ghost, etc.
Keep the room where the party will be very dark with just a few candles for light, have food like cupcakes with black icing and eyeballs and stuff on them.
I think it sounds fun, but it might be too much like halloween for you (we dont have halloween here).
One of these two ideas might help...they're not too common, but they're not weird either lol.
1. Black & White
Hold a "Black and White" event and ask everyone to come dressed in formal black and white attire. As the "birthday honoree", you wear red. This lets you stand out and really looks nice in pictures! The party could be centered around dancing and food at a nice catering hall.
2. Viva Las Vegas
Have a Las Vegas themed party. Ask guests to come dressed in glitzy Vegas attire. At the party, have different tables set up with classic casino and card games. Give out paper money at the beginning of the night to get people started off on earning chips. They can trade in the money at the start of the party for a set amount of chips and then use those to play more games. At the end of the night, have people trade in all their chips for a ticket to enter a raffle where you could give away a small to large prize. Of course remember dinner or small appetizers...people always come hungry! Also, if your renting a catering hall, dancing is a great way to keep people entertained. Just add some good music and your set :)
Hope I helped :) Good luck, and happy birthday!
Do you have a favorite movie or television series that you like? Use that as your theme and have everyone come as a character from it. Hire theatre students to portray major characters that will infiltrate your crowd and put on "mini shows". Decorations should go along with the theme, as should food and drink. Mostly, just plan on having the time of your life!
Masquerade ball? Did you see Marie Antoinette? They have those really elegant half masks...THat was pretty different and fun.
Put classic dress-up accessories like masks, hats and feather boas into your party decorations -fun and function! Add long strands of beads or whatever else you like.
Hang masks and sparkly top hats on your walls, and drape colorful boas and leis over floor lamps and doorknobs and around banisters. Tell guests that they can borrow them in case they forgot to wear a costume or want to add some finishing touches to what they're wearing.
Put a vanity table in the bathroom with costume makeup and some crazy wigs and leave out bowls filled with disposable cameras in the party room.
Here's a website to help plan...plus they have 50 or so other ideas if you don't like mine. Have fun!

I LOVE the idea for having a "sweet" 16 and doing the candy theme. The sweet and candy just make sense, but I am not sure about where you live, but no one does them around me. It really could possibly be one of the easiest to decorate and your ideas are endless, while at the same time, cheaper than most. I have alot of creative and different ideas for a candy theme, if you or anyone would be interested please let me know, I would be glad to help.
Thanks ,
Kim
