Anyone have any ideas on how to throw a hawaiian/beach theme party on a budget?!

Question:

Anyone have any ideas on how to throw a hawaiian/beach theme party on a budget?

I need some creative suggestions and some hawaiian food and drink recipes.

Answers:
Most party or crafts stores should have leis as well as little umbrellas for drinks. You can probably find supplies at these locations to make grass skirts for all your guests.

Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs
* 3 tablespoons soy sauce
* 3 tablespoons brown sugar
* 2 tablespoons sherry
* 1 tablespoon sesame oil
* 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
* 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 2 inch pieces
* 1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
* skewers

DIRECTIONS

1. In a shallow glass dish, mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, sherry, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic powder. Stir the chicken pieces and pineapple into the marinade until well coated. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours.
2. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
3. Lightly oil the grill grate. Thread chicken and pineapple alternately onto skewers. Grill 15 to 20 minutes, turning occasionally, or until chicken juices run clear.

Ahi Poke (Raw tuna salad)
* 2 pounds fresh tuna steaks, cubed
* 1 cup soy sauce
* 3/4 cup chopped green onions
* 2 tablespoons sesame oil
* 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
* 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper (optional)
* 2 tablespoons finely chopped macadamia nuts

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium size non-reactive bowl, combine Ahi, soy sauce, green onions, sesame oil, sesame seeds, chili pepper, and macadamia nuts; mix well. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.

Sesame Crusted Mahi Mahi with Soy Shiso Ginger Butter Sauce
* 3 shallots, minced
* 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger root
* 1 lemon, juiced
* 1/2 cup dry white wine
* 1/2 cup heavy cream
* 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small cubes
* 3 tablespoons soy sauce
* 4 shiso leaves
* coarse kosher salt
* ground white pepper
* 2 tablespoons canola oil
* 6 (6 ounce) mahi mahi fillets
* 4 tablespoons sesame seeds
* 4 tablespoons black sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS

1. In a sauce pan over medium heat, combine shallots, ginger, lemon juice, and white wine. Cook until liquid is reduced to approximately 2 tablespoons. Stir in heavy cream, and bring to light boil. Reduce cream by half; do not burn. Stir in soy sauce, then transfer to blender. Blend on low while slowly adding butter, a few cubes at a time, until all of the butter is emulsified. Roughly chop or tear shiso, add to sauce, and blend for about 10 more seconds. Season to taste with kosher salt and pepper. Keep sauce warm.
2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
3. Heat oil in a large saute pan over high heat. Season both sides of the fillets with kosher salt and white pepper. Mix together white and black sesame seeds, and place in a plate or flat dish. Press the TOP side only of each fillet into the mixture, and press seeds into fish so it sticks. Make sure that the crusted sides are evenly crusted with the seeds. When oil is smoking, add fish, sesame seed side down to pan, and be careful of oil splatters. Pan sear fish for about 30 to 45 seconds per side. Place pan into oven, or transfer fish to baking sheet, and cook in oven for about 5 to 6 minutes. Serve sesame crust side up with ginger butter sauce.

Oyako Donburi (Hawaiian Soup)
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 3/4 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into strips
* 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
* 1 cup chicken broth
* 6 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked until soft, then sliced into strips
* 1 carrot, julienned
* 2 tablespoons white sugar
* 4 tablespoons soy sauce
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup chopped green onions
* 5 eggs, beaten

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Saute chicken strips and onion until the chicken is cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off as much liquid as possible.
2. Stir in the chicken broth, and simmer for 2 minutes. Add the mushrooms and carrot, and let simmer for a few minutes before stirring in the sugar, soy sauce and salt. Simmer for 3 more minutes. Sprinkle in half of the green onions, stirring gently. Pour beaten eggs over the chicken mixture, and simmer until the eggs are cooked through, about 10 minutes. Serve over Japanese sticky rice.

hawaiian punch
get a bottle of hawaiian punch and a bottle of lemon/lime soda mix add ice add pineapple slices
i also threw my little girl a hawaiian party i got the stuff from a party store and also dollar store

I'd hit up your local dollar store for supplies like lei's and drink stirrers. Also Target, Costco, or Sam's Club for party supplies. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic (you don't say) can be anything tropical just minus the alcohol. You can get the drink mix stuff at any supermarket.

And it may be kinda fun for a little while to have authentic Hawaiian music. Like at the end of the night maybe when things are winding down. You can get it over your computer and the sound is great even with bad speakers:

For centerpieces-get a fresh pineapple at the market and put it on the center of the table with either 3-4 small glass votives placed around (if it;s night) or a lei draped over it if it's daytime.
For app's-terriyaki chicken skewers, or search www.recipezaar.com fo theme ideas!

www.orientaltrading.com has GREAT themed marty supplies for dirt cheap!

Aloha errinell, Boy did "helpless" shoot us "out the water" or what? LOL!(jk). I'm a caterer, and we do "luau" themed gigs all the time. When you send your invitations, have everyone wear something "hawaiian" and (make it potluck, so everyone is contributing! A lot less "headaches" for you). As far as "decorating", I would purchase some "Tiki" lamps. They are an "inexpensive" way to accent. Plus they repel insects, via "oil and/or citronella candles" (I'm assuming this will be outdoors?) Purchase "grass cloth" or/ hawaiian print material(check for remnants) and "silk orchids" for the tables. Or better yet, go "scouting" in your neighborhood for some "fresh" items ie; ferns, palm leaves, fresh flowers(gardenias,hibiscus,jas... etc...( with your neighbors permission...LOL!). You can also "personalize" your food displays with " fake-coconut halves" for dipping sauces (found at your local "party-supply"). "Fondue" is also great! Lots of cubed "fresh fruits, chicken/fish"? Don't forget, "luau's" are a "hands-on feast"! So, put on that "grass-skirt", leave your shoes at the door.........Mahalo! XOXO Moonpie

The dollar store has great hawaiian favors!!

Do what Hawaiians do. Spread out several large colorful towels with some overlap so everyone can flop in a face to face large circle outside under a palm (check to confirm no coconuts can fall on anyone). Into every face and arm reach drop several eighteen can cases of warm cheap brews.
Then, after every can has been killed, work it off by with rough horseplay, loud colorful cursing, and being hungover later.
If hungry, go break into hotel lobby vending machines.
