I would try to stick with an italian theme. Different types of pasta and sauces, lasagna, chicken parmesean, and ravioli. You could also a few soups and salads. Maybe even if it is at a hotel ask if they could do a few really exotic pizzas.

you should serve several different types of food people can choose from, for example breaded chicken, breaded onion rings, seafood (shrimp, crab, lobster), ribs...
basically anything you could eat with a fork.
Hope you have fun!

Are you the 16 year old or are you the mom? That might be helpful in knowing how skilled in the kitchen you are.

Food ideas that are good buffet style:
asian theme (2 or more stirfries, a thai soup, supplemented with cool sashami you can pick up from your favorite sushi place. For the warm dishes, you can buy several orders of pad thai and put them in a warming dish. Then you can also do a sweet and sour chicken or whatever your favorite other chicken is. For the soup, you just add chicken broth to coconut milk and some chili oil. Top it with chives.

I did not like the suggestion above mine because fried foods do not fit the formality level you are shooting for. I do not agree either that you should go all over the place with your menu. Stick to a theme. if you don't like asian, how about...
Seafood- peel and eat shrimp, crab legs, lobster cheese fondue (get the recipe Red Lobster uses), crab cakes and corn on the cobb or steamed asparagas.

I'd go with lasagne, or ( since it's Spring), Spaghetti Primavera, green salad, , and cheese bread. Cheesecake for dessert.
