Question:

Does anyone have any tips for Barbecueing on an outdoor barbecue pit?

I can't barbecue to save my life. I'm planning a party and i want to have a barbecue on one of those outdoor grill/pit's in most national parks. Unfortunately I don't know how long to cook my meats for. There's gonna be about 30 people.

For that many people you might have more fun doing something like pulled pork, which you can do in advance in your oven, put it in disposable aluminum pans and then reheat on the grill at your picnic destination.

If you have your heart set on grilling on an outdoor grill/pit, consider doing things like hot dogs and varieties of sausages that are actually pre-cooked (ask the guy behind the meat counter for help with this.) Undercooked burgers and chicken breasts on a public grill could be risky if you're not familiar with grilling. And you'll be one very busy guy cooking for 30 people.

When back on your home turf, working with your own grill, you may find the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com helpful. Just enter the items you want to grill and it will give you printable instructions for how to grill steak, chicken breast, pork chops, etc. It also has grilling instructions.

Enjoy your cookout!

What type of meat? That will determine cook times. Best bet is to buy a meat thermometer and follow the internal temp chart....oh and don't burn your meat.....

Low and Slow, Don't burn the meat.

hot dogs hamburger and steak are real easy to cook and you can see when they're done cuz they change color, 8 to 15 minutes...chicken breasts take the most time to cook about 20 to 30 minutes

I don't know if this will help, but it may help:
