A housewarming party is associated with gifts for the house!. You can do that soon after you move in!. In contrast, an open house is just a "drop by" party!. Gifts aren't expected, though people may bring small hostess gifts!.

Registering for a hosewarming party is controversial!. I agree with the author of website below that it feels a little tacky, but it's a growing trend!. Never include the registry info in your invitation!. Only if people ask!.
