BBQ party for 30 people?!

Question:

BBQ party for 30 people?

im having a BBQ party for about 30 people not counting 6 kids . how much food( burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings) should i buy?without going crazy on money or food ?or is it better just to buy from a resturant food all ready made? thank you

Answers:
I have a yearly BBQ for anywhere from 50-75 people. I supply burgers and hot dogs and refreshments. I typically figure one hot dog per person and 1.5 hamburgers. I estimate the hamburbers at 1/4 pound each.

Using these numbers, I would figure like this:
30 - 40 hot dogs (add a few for the kids)
30 people * 1.5 hamburgers is 45 hamburgers.
45 hamburgers * 1/4 pound each is about 11 - 12 pounds
of ground meat.

A couple of things to remember:
- Get enough buns for more food than you plan.
- Get the fixins (ketchup, pickles, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.)
- Don't forget the cheese.
- You can have people bring chips/pretzels/etc.
- Drinks are usually the most important things, so make sure you have enough. People are likely to bring their own drinks, but that's the one thing that you don't want to run out of.
- Paper plates and plastic cups are easiest to clean up!

You're going to have left overs, but figure that you'll be eating BBQ for the next few days. You can always have a "relapse" party.

If you're comfortable on the grill, it will be much cheaper, and much more fun to do it all on your own. Above all, don't forget to enjoy yourself! Let other people handle the grill for a while to give you a break. They'll love it, and you'll get to socialize for a while. Have fun!

BBQ'ing for friends for about 20 years.

make a roaster of BBQ chicken wings about 60 wings will fit
I'd have at least 40 to 50 burgers and 60 to 80 hot dogs
Make a large potato or macaroni salad
a veggie tray is nice
get some fillers like chips, pretzels, corn chips, chips and salsa.
make some deviled eggs

personally I think it cost a lot more if you have it made then it is to do it yourself.

Its a lot of work but the quality and taste speak volumes.

Go wholesale (Costco, BJs, SAMs) and buy a large pack of each meat. When the food is gone, its gone. If anyone ask if you need them to bring anything, tell them drinks and/or ice. Don't forget the buns for the burgers and dogs!

you gotta make plan early...30 adults I am assuming is alot of food. Maybe 100 to 200 dollars of food. Just do the math..assuming everyone would want 1 hotdog 1 burger and 1 chicken wing. And buy packs of each up to 30 or so each. Drinks plates cups forks knives...restaurant works also but its not as fun as actually making your own food on the barbucue...thats really the whole point of having a barbucue, is to see yourself cooking the food. Plus the food is delicous. Have fun

I'd throw a couple of briskets in the oven the day before and let them cook for several hours on low heat. Then you'll just have to slice and rewarm before the party. That also frees up the grill for the hot dogs and/or burgers.

The equation that I have always used is 1and 1/2 times the people you are having so 54 hot dogs and 54 hamburgers. Generally it is not cost effective to buy from a restaurant. Not to mention then you need to reheat. I would suggest going to your local butcher make your hamburger patties up ahead of time or purchase ready made patties. Cook a little more than 1/2 to start keep the rest in the fridge. Then as the cooked ones get low add more to the grill. Any leftovers can easily be frozen and used for other smaller meals.

I would get 1 each of the hot dogs & burgers. The wings will be hard to guess.Just set an amount that you want to spend on them and buy that much only.I would fill them up on heavier salads and dip&chips.A big green salad with a relish tray will fill up the ones that will only need 1 burger or hot dog.Put the meats together and the people will only take 1 of each, then they may go back and get whatever is left.Potato and pasta are heavy and easy on the pocket, plus men will fill up on them.Set the salads at the beginning of the line, then the chip&dip, then your meats and buns.Have a great time at the party and don't let it break you..Hope this helps....

You'd rather have more than enough than too little or just enough

It'll be cheaper to make the food yourself.
100 wings
30-40 hot dogs
30 hamburger patties
5 lbs cole slaw
5 lbs potato salad
condiments: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, mustard, ketchup, relish
