The absolutely best meal that I have ever had was when the whole family made reservations at the Hilltop Herb Farm which at that time was in Cleveland, Texas. The restaurant was not open to the public, generally speaking, they just had one or two buffet style meals each week where you would book reservations and pay for the meal, about $50 per person, and this was about 20 years ago, way in advance. There were around 200-300 selections of appetizers, cheeses, fruits, crudites, nuts, salads, relishes, chutneys, side dishes, pasta, rice dishes, seafood, soups, breads, rolls, cornbread, muffins and biscuits, herbal butters, honeys, jams, and four or five entrees, herbal teas and coffees and desserts and homemade candies. It was not the quantity of food that was so impressive, although it was, but it was the exquisite quality of the freshly prepared foods all with the most outstanding and unusual herbal and spice combinations I have ever tasted. These people were absolutely the most fearless chefs I have ever encountered. The meal was served on the wooden floor of the greenhouse of the farm with chairs and tables interspersed within the beautiful foliage. The meal lasted 4 to 5 hours. Each dish had a hand written card placed in front of it with the name of the recipe and the ingredients. Of course, as you can imagine you could sample but a teaspoonful of only a small portion of the offerings. The meal was paced out over so many hours in order to make room for everything from soup to nuts. They had a quaint country store and gift shop where you could buy the wares and cookbooks, oils, candles, soups, jams and jellies, and the like. Also, the plants on the Herb Farm were for sale. So, you could get up several times during the meal and meander (waddle) down to the country store or the Herb Farm and walk off what you had eaten. It was not a rushed affair, but very relaxed, elegant although simple and unpretentious, with beautiful classical music played in the background. Madeleine Hill wrote a cookbook, a fine one, which you can find on Amazon.com. The Hilltop Herb Farm, recipes and all, were purchased by the Chain-of-Lakes Resort which is an hour NE of Houston in the Big Thicket about 15 years ago. The original Hilltop Herb Farm was destroyed by a tornado right before the guests arrived for a Saturday evening meal.
Although the grand scale of this type of meal has been pared down, the prices are more afforable and the restaurant is still a lovely and memorable place to eat. Check out the website!

my moms Fettuccine Alfredo and garlic bread
Well, my favorite cuisine is Chinese. But for the "Best Dinner" award...I'd nominate a BBQ'd Rib Eye steak done rare, dilled potato salad, steamed veggies and a lovely glass of red wine.
Absolutely NOTHING can beat a proper Sunday roast with all the trimmings!!! NOTHING!!
