Answers:
The best thing would be to figure out what he likes to do with everyone. Maybe the type of food or games he enjoys. I know if I was a soldier heading back to Iraq, I would want my friends and family to entertain me with things I am comfortable with and things that will stay in my mind for my duration of service. Hope everything comes to plan with your party.

I have always had good luck with Hawaiian themes. The kids love it, and you can make yummy fruity drinks (alcoholic and non)! You can get accessories from Oriental Trading Company, really inexpensive! Good luck to your friend's husband!!!

a barbecue with a pinata, frozen margaritas, beer, brisket, potato salad, potato sack races etc.

Are the kids coming too? If so, plan on having an area where they can play, do games, eat, and have a fun activity. This might be a good time to enlist a neighborhood teen to babysit and entertain. The menu should consist of kid foods for them: hot dogs, chicken tenders, spaghetti, chips and such. Cupcakes are a good alternative too.

For the adults, if a potluck is out of the question, then I'd consider something yummy like homemade lasagne with green salad, garlic/herb/cheese bread and a nice dessert. When I think of someone going away to war, I think about the fact that one of the things they are going to miss are home-cooked meals. Comfort foods might be appropriate here, such as:

1. baked chicken
2. barbecued steaks, chicken, sausages
3. Potato casserole
4. Green bean casserole
5. Spinach salad
6. Ambrosia

and so on. If you are drinkers, then have plenty of white and red wines around, beer, and bottles of water and soda. Somebody will need to be the designated driver, especially if there are kids involved. And, a concientious hostess will pay attention to who is having too much "fun" and start pouring coffee for dessert!

throw a Hawaiian luau, make them all were the lays necklaces, hula skirts, and those dorky male shirts with scenes of the beach and stuff, for food make kabobs with steak and peppers and onions, and chips and dip, buffalo wings, and for drinks well to young to drink so i don't know any kinds so i will tell you how to decorate it, find a light blue drink, and some wine glasses, pour the drink in it, then put a little umbrella on it, and around the drink put cool tropical flowers!
