Food for tropical birthday party?!

Question:

Food for tropical birthday party?

I am having a birthday party for my soon to be 7 year old and am inviting all of her classmates. I am wondering what sort of snacks and drinks I should have. I am not serving a meal just snacks and cupcakes with little cocktail umbrellas in them but I have no idea what flavor or little finger foods to make. Any ideas?

How about fruit Kabobs with strawberry yogurt as a dipping sauce? Just thread assorted sliced fruit onto bamboo skewers (you will find them over by the cooking utensils in Walmart for about $1. for 50 of them) and either poke them into a watermelon as a centerpiece or arrange them on a pretty platter, serve with a bowl of strawberry yogurt on an ice platter for dipping.

CHEERS!

These sites have so many ideas that I think you should look at it, instead of pasting just one or two:

I doubt 7 year olds will make the connection or appreciate tropical themed foods, so I'd just keep the tropical theme to the decorations and save yourself some time and grief...lol Maybe some chicken nuggets with different dipping sauces. How about a punch with equal parts red Hawaiian Punch and ginger ale. Add sherbert to it right at serving time. How about some cut up fruit like pineapple, strawberries, bananas and apples with a great fruit dip made from 2 bricks of cream cheese and a jar of marshmallow fluff. Good Luck!

Pineapple, coconut, carrots, celery, fish shaped crackers, cheese cut like palm trees. Have fun

marinate chicken strips in terriake marinade & thread onto bamboo skewers (soak the skewers in water for 20 minutes to prevent them from burning) then grill until done. poke ends of skewers into a melon half (skin side up on a festive serving platter). also, you can skewer fresh fruit pieces (pineapple, melon, strawberry, mango, etc....) and serve the same way, or simply carve out 1/2 of a pineapple to make a boat and serve the fruit pieces in there. buy ready-made pizza crusts & sauce, add ham & pineapple and some mozzerella & put together "hawaiian pizza." little coconut macaroons make cute dessert pieces as well. you can also make a pasta salad (any recipe will do) and substitue brown and wild rice for the pasta - to give it a tropical flair.

kiddie cocktails in brightly colored plastic cups with a couple of fruit pieces on a cocktail umbrella would be cute as well. you can do something as simple as a fruit punch, or get fancy and make kiddie mimosas (orange juice & sparkling cider or gingerale) or kiddie daqueris (fruit, juice & ice in a blender) or kiddie pina coladas (you can buy the mix w/o the liquor & just add ice & blend).

Here are a few ideas: Fruit Kabobs with pineapple, mango, strawberries, grapes

PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE
FRUIT- LIKE PINEAPPLES, BANANNAS, ETC.

Tropical fruit salad or kababs.

For Hawaiian Polynesian theme:
Cubes of ham and pineapple with marascino cherries should appeal to kids.

Asian chicken wings
1 large garlic clove
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons mild honey
1 teaspoon Asian sesame oil
Pinch of cayenne
3 lb chicken wingettes or chicken wings (see cooks' note, below)
1 1/2 tablespoons sesame seeds, lightly toasted
1 scallion (green part only), finely chopped preparation
Put oven rack in upper third of oven and preheat oven to 425°F. Line a large shallow baking pan (17 by 12 inches) with foil and lightly oil foil.

Mince garlic and mash to a paste with salt using a large heavy knife. Transfer garlic paste to a large bowl and stir in soy sauce, hoisin, honey, oil, and cayenne. Add wingettes to sauce, stirring to coat.

Arrange wingettes in 1 layer in baking pan and roast, turning over once, until cooked through, about 35 minutes. Transfer wingettes to a large serving bowl and toss with sesame seeds and scallion.

Cooks' note:
If using chicken wings instead of wingettes, cut off and discard tips from chicken wings with kitchen shears or a large heavy knife, then halve wings at joint

Pineapple punch
1 (46 ounce) can pineapple juice
1 (2 liter) bottle ginger ale
ice

Mai Tai
2 oz white rum
1/2 Curacao
1/2 Orgeat (almond liquor)
1 tbs Lime juice

Step 1 Stir ingredients in a big glass.
Step 2 Add crushed ice, a fruit garnish, a straw and serve.

mangos, watermelon, any kind of fuits cut into bite sized pieces on toothpics or little swords, which ever is less sharp, considering the age group. usually at party stores they have hawian stuff, too. party city is a good low budget store for picking up all kinds of fun stuff. Good luck
