Smartie gave you an informative answer, but as someone who has been in the busines for over 13 years it's a little more involved. Event Planning is an art. Event Coordinating is a skill. Event Design is a gift. I started my own company a few years ago with its own unique twist. It involves event planning, designing, and catering. Planners have a drive; we have been called visionaries. We get the job done at whatever cost. Cost being the operative word. Knowing how to make a persons dreams come true on a shoe string budget is skill. Its called the "Caviar Dreams on a Spam Budget" skill. Surely, it has its personal rewards as well. Once established, you work for yourself, you travel if you've become well known. Lastly, you are able to say that you made someones event special.

I am not a party planner but have consulted with them more than a few times. They first go to decor, food and entertainment places and sign a contract with them to receive commision on every reference they send to them. When people phone you, you give them ideas and get your partners to help you. Its a easy business with a really fun side. Have fun!
