What happens when you walk out of a restaurant without paying?!

Question:

What happens when you walk out of a restaurant without paying?

do they take it out of the waitress check or does the restaurant just eat it or what?

Answers:
In my restaurant experience its usually the nicer restaurants will take it upon themselves to pay for it, while lower end ones make the server pay for it. But thats only if they dont catch you. Its not as easy as it sounds, they may stop you at the door, chase you down the street (ive seen it) and sometimes even call the police (easy to do in a city setting)

Just an ugly scene and peoples are crowding you.

Having known someone who waited in the US, it is not unusual for the restaurant to take it out of the waiter's (waitresses) check over there. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I think it would be a breach of labour laws for a restaurant to do that here in Australia.

till i know.they make u do work in the restaurant.

if they were able to catch you up they would surely send you to jail or you might end up washing their dishes...

I think the person who runs the restaurant pays for it...but it's rude to walk out without paying

I'm not sure as far as they waitress is concerned, she may have to pay for your rudeness. My son has worked in several different restaurants, they each handle it differently.

Anyone who pulls this childish stunt deserves to be caught and tossed in jail!

I waitessed for 20 years they rarely ever would catch anyone if ever walking out without paying they usually don't charge the server due to the fact restaurants don't have that right ,but that field is a very horrible field to work in many illegal rules, I have heard of them charging $10 for a missing check but not where I've worked, They should charge the cashier for letting them walk out

Some restaurants make the waiter pay or you get caught and it is not pretty to have a police problem. Don't dine and dash.

High end restaurants, in my experience, never charge the wait staff. In some cities there is a law called" defrauding an innkeeper", a serious charge if the person is caught. Eat-and-run is a no-no.

I worked as a waitress years ago and when this happened I knew WHO the party was so I let the management know and the NEXT time the party came it to eat they were presented with the previous bill with a note attached saying something like this " I'm sure you were having such a great time you just simply overlooked paying" Never was I charged for a walk out.

The "Dine and Dash" routine is getting to be more popular these days because its a challenge. Unfortunately, someone has to eat the cost of the food ordered and consumed and its both the waitress as well as the restaurant, which also makes prices go up. Sometimes they have cameras in the restaurants so that they can prosecute people that do this. Or, I've known of folks that chase people down and call the police. Either way, I think its a cheap shot and there are other ways to have fun.

If a person can not afford to go to a Restaurant don't' do it it be embarrassing to get arrested and the person will have a criminal history

It's illegal, it's called theft of services.
