Sweet 16 80's Party?!

Question:

Sweet 16 80's Party?

Hi, I am working on throwing a backyard Hip Hop 80's Sweet 16 party for my daughter. Does anyone have any tips for me?

Answers:
She was not even alive in the 80's so why would you throw and 80's party?

Be sure to have plenty of neon things. And don't forget the great music!

Ask all the kids to dress in 80's costume.(obviously)
then watch a bunch of 80's movies like Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles, and get ideas from there.
Or on MTV there was a girl who did a Super Sweet 16 80's theme, and you can see what she did, and go from there.

And remember the 80's were flashy! so big bracelets, hair spray, and neon things.

Make sure that your family's mullets are long and greasy. Also having a sweet trans am parked in the lawn would be great. Rock On.

id say to dress up with nice afro's and bring the house down with some 80's classics.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Just make sure to get the invites out in time so people have plenty of time to prepare a great 80's ensemble. You could do a break-dancing competition. Hand out slap-bracelets (available on e-bay or party websites). Have a classic 80's movie playing like Ferris Buelle's Day Off. Also make the invitations as themed as possible, use lame 80's fonts that you can download for FREE online to make them. Use 80's language like tubular, and radical on them as well. Sounds like it should be a great party! Don't forget to pump plenty of 80's music as well and have an old skool nintendo just for good measure! Good luck!

Do you want hip hop or 80's? These are two very different types of music. You have to have those leg warmer type things to put over the skinny jeans. Really big hair. Striped shirts (which are now in style), flats, and the music. Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Wham, Tears for Fears. The language someone was referring to is more of a Valley Girl language and didn't last long. Don't forget the song "We Are The World." That son was huge back then.

If you concentrate on the theme being a backyard old skool Hip hop Sweet 16 party then i have some ideas..

Here's a sample playlist:

1. Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C
2. The Magic Number - De La Soul
3. Jump Around - House Of Pain
4. Push It
5. Summertime - Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
6. OPP - Naughty By Nature
7. Nuthin' But A G Thang - Dr. Dre
8. Sound Of Da Police - KRS-One
9. What U Waiting 4? - Jungle Brothers (Jungle Fever edit)
10. Description Of A Fool - A Tribe Called Quest
11. It Takes Two - Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
12. Know How - Young M.C.
13. Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force
14. Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
15. The Message - Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
16. I.O.U - Freeez
17. I Can't Wait - Nu Shooz
18. Come Into My Life - Joyce Sims
19. Talkin' All That Jazz - Stetsasonic
20. Let The Beat Hit 'Em - Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam

Make sure the music is blaring out of a boom box!

Get black and silver paper plates and platters to serve up pizzas and large clear cups to serve lemonade and coca cola.

The kids should wear baseball caps..all the usual attire!

Hope it goes well and that i have been some help!! :)

Hip hop was not really the thing in the 80s and does not mark it as to what the 80s were remembered for. Miami Vice, pastel clothes, new wave and funny hair, big hair rock bands, video games like pacman and valley speak. (They do sell these $18.00 pads at Target that just plug into the TV that have the old school games, which would be fun).

Hip hop? Hmmm...... yes there was break dancing so a huge flattened cardboard box with a boombox and an upside down 5 gallon paint bucket would do it. Prince, the Time and funk pretty much ruled the day. A purple Prince theme might work. But as far as hiphop Run DMC and The Beastie Boys got going what came later. Tame by todays standards and most of the kids won't get it.

You might wish to rethink the era for the party. But if you have adults there as well it could be fun. But all in all it could be that it won't really be her party but more for the adults. Or move to the retro 70s thing with George Jones sort of thing. But all in all a more upscale "ladylike" might be the way to go.

Have her wear ripped jeans and big hair!! The 80's rocked!! Have a good time!!

Hip hop 80's had some cool style. Check out what Salt N Peppa wore then and Public Enemy as well as RUN DMC. Do some research and address the children to do the same.
