I would like to display a wedding cake as the centerpiece on the guest tables.?
The cakes would each serve around 10 and be part of the decoration. My problem is that we are having the tables pre-set with the dinner plate & I don't know how to get the dessert plates & forks to my guests. We are also having salad, but guests will put that on the main plate. If I put out dessert plates & dessert forks, how do I keep them from using those for salad?
Answers:
Have the tables set up like this.....Have the plates set up.....then have the cake centered on the table.....the desert plates should be 2 inches away from the cake with a fork next to each.....The plates should line up with the dinner plates then guests wont have the urge to eat off of the dessert plates before the cake is served
When the wait staff clears the tables, they can set the dessert dishes. I assume they will also be cutting the centerpiece cakes since you wouldn't want guests doing that themselves.
You could have them clear the dinner dishes. Then come with a stack of dessert plates and forks and the cake servers. They cut the cake, place each piece on a plate with a fork, and pass them out to the people sitting at the table.
Well, I was at a wedding where they did something similar and had small cakes at each table, but then to serve it that was not the cake you actually ate. You could buy like, undecorated sheet cakes, have it cut and served to your guests. That way they aren't actually eatign the cake AT the table. Then have some sort of raffle or something to give away the centerpieces to a guest of each table. . .I know it's not the idea you had in mind, but I thought it was worth mentioning it because everyone seemed to love it at that wedding!
I would have the cake plates set out after the meal is done, or use the cake plates and forks as a part of the centerpiece- circle them around the cakes, if possible, or stack them and set them neatly to one side.
When it's time for dessert, remove the cakes from the table and take them to a serving station where you have the dessert plates stacked. People can line up and get their own slice and take it back to the table.
its sounds like a potential disaster!
Assuming your plates will be white. Get some food coloring & small paint brushes & paint little pics of cakes on the plates. Or even some playful wording letting the guests know it's for the cake.
