I need help with a going away party!?
My son has joined the army guard and will be leaving in less than two months for basic training. He will celebrate his 18th party during this time as well. I'd like to throw a good luck/happy birthday party, any and all ideas welcome!!

Good luck to your son! How about a red, white, and blue party? You could decorate with some flags and red, white and blue balloons, etc.
Have a all-american barbeque - hambergers, hot dogs, brats, baked beans, potato salad, chips and dip. See if your local bakery could not do a sheet cake w/ the army logo on it.
invite his friends and family.... barbeque's are always fun and relaxing
paintball party. That will get him ready for going to basic. That is one of the things we did before my hubby left for basic.

- pass around a small journal and have everyone write a piece of advice/message to him
- take tons of pictures of his friends and family at the party and put them in an album for him to take
- have everyone purchase a phone card for him and make a phone card tree for him (or gift card tree)
- for "party favors" pass out stamped envelopes addressed to him at basic for his friends and family to send him notes in
to throw a away party, pick a place you want to throw it and decorated that place with banders, balloons, etc. Then put a sign up saying "we will miss you". then make it a surprise by not telling him and try to not let him come into the place your throwing the party. then finally invite people to come to the party. Like his friends, or family.
i will try to help you the best way i can what you want to do is get him some army colors or his favorite color that he loves ever since you gave birth.. If you are planning to buy or make a cake put his favorite cartoon/name on the cake,but u want to surprise him by getting his girlfriend or family member to take him out until u call that person back on the cell phone to bring him back to the house but if your son told u he wants a party for his birthday and going away tell him u can do it cause u have a lot of thing in your hands.
A good way to have a good time is to have a few friends around for a few drinks and a BBQ.
At the age of 18 he is old enough to enjoy a beer or two, to hell with the law if that is an issue. Parental control is recognised in many countries.
If he is man enough to serve his country he is man enough to enjoy a beer.

I agree totally with Murray if this picnic/BBQ is to be held at your house. Let him have a beer or two under your supervision. After all, he'll probably have a few over there. I would not go with any military theme. Except...get a white t-shirt for him (maybe with the Army logo?) and all the guests can sign it with best wishes and their names. It'll give him a good keepsake to take along and remember his friends and family.

Make it a elegant Dinner Party with a lot of his friends and the family there.Let people make (apple cider) toasts to him.Then have the cake and presents after Dinner,when everyone has relaxed and can eat again.You know your son what would suit him?I enjoy sit down Dinners for family gatherings.Hope this helps....
