I know that this seems nuts, but take as much furniture out of your living room as possible. No matter what you do something horrible is going to happen to your furniture.

One great idea is to have a black light party. Black lights are pretty cheap decorations. You can get bulbs for existing lights at Walmart, but you can get tube lights (I am not sure if that's what they are really called) for about $15 a piece that is a lot better. You can accerorize this with anything that will light up, and believe me everything lights up! Glow in the dark items work better, but really everything will make a statement. There are stars, velvet (oh yes, I said it) pictures, and stickers. You can also get glow sticks, necklaces for them to wear. Depending on your patience and cleaning skills, is to sprinkle confetti on the floor. It has a lot of impact but it is a b*&^ch to clean up. A swiffer (which I didn't have before) did do a good job though.

For food I wouldn't put a lot of expense into it. Go to BJ's or any wholesale food vendor and buy appetizers. They have a ton of different foods. For 18 people if you bought 8 - 10 large boxes you will have plenty. The key is to only buy things that they don't need plates or untensils for. Cleaning up crumbs is easier than cleaning up pizza sauce. Plus, you can get something everyone would like. If you would like the soda to be something special freeze grapes instead of ice cubes.

Make sure you have music. Depending on the type of music that your daughter likes I would suggest a "That's what they call music" type(s) of CD(s). That way everyone gets a chance. Also, depending on what type of cable you have there is a party music channel on one of the higher channels, among others. You may be able to get away with this. They have rock, R & B, dance, etc. channels you could just turn on.

As for activities, this depends on your daughter. If they dance, you are all set. If they don't this may take more thought and incentive. Generally at this age people are self conscious. Perhaps pictionary or a scavenger hunt.

Hope the birthday is fun!

I love to throw parties at my house. I am having a backyard luau next month. I get a magazine called Oriental Trading and it has the cheapest, nicest party supplies and a bunch of themes too.
here's the site:

well first, are there boys and girls, just girls, just boys, cause that can effect the color scheme of the party, well anyways make the colors like green and light blue get streamers and hang them from the ceiling, and get cups, plates, forks and spoons, and napkins in those colors
music- get a dj, or a really good radio, play songs like We Fly High, Face Down, Irraplacible, and the cha cha slide

A fake luau or beach party is always fun you can do hawaiian punch and hawaiian pizza for the food, get a hula girl cake, decorate with palm trees, grass skirts and leis. Blue and white crepe paper along the walls could be like the ocean. The kids could dress in aloha shirts, buy cheap plastic leis and shells to wear.
