What were the popular flowers of the 1960's?
I am planning a dinner party for my mother who is turning 60. She was in high school and college in the 60's, so we are having a 1960's themed party. She hated all the hippy, psychadelic stuff, she was more of a 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' type of dresser, very classic. Any suggestions for flowers, decorations, etc? Thanks!

I should mention that it is a surprise party, so I really can't ask too much. I know she loves roses, but I wasn't sure what other flowers were popular for arrangements at dinner parties. Thanks!!

If your wanting something with a little more class, Try baskets of Irises, daylillies and daiseys. Irises were big back then and look great in flower arrangements. They smell wonderful too. Just add alot of greenery to fill in the basket. Would even be nice to have a planter in the baskets with some fresh cut flowers arranged in them, so after the flowers are gone she has the planters to keep as a reminders. Or maybe even something she can plant outside afterwards, Mothers always like something they can show off later.

My mother always had arrangements with violets and daisies for evening arrangements and for the daytime, has mixed wild flowers in vibrant colors (yellow, orange, small blue flowers and what they call 'straw flowers' in purple and white).
Though if she was more of a classic dresser, I would stick with roses or lillies.
Perhaps your mother has a particular favorite that conjurs up special memories of those years. Daisy's were quite popular, as were daffodils and gardenias. I once wore baby pink roses to a prom during those years.....anyway, ask her what her favorite was during that time and use that!

And now you can get them in a huge variety of colors.
Part of this depends on what part of the country you are in. Back then, if we were buying flowers, it was carnations, daisies, and roses and in the fall--mums. (Florists would color carnations by putting white ones in colored water. The flowers would absorb the color with the water and tint the flowers to match our dresses in lavendar, pink, pale green or pale blue. I shake my head thinking about it now.)
If we were bringing in yard flowers we used iris, honeysuckle, roses, and daylilies.
I think the colored carnations would bring the most comments. Good-luck.

Gardenias were quite the thing. However.. for a dinner party simplicity is wonderful and 1 to 3 roses from wal-marts or a discount grocery type store are relatively inexpensive, with babys breath. in a crystal bud vase. Another idea would be African violets or even real violets in tea cups. they could be given as door prizes perhaps.
I think it would be fun to use a variety of china as well as silverware.. not trying to match. perhaps using movie posters from that time period. Autograph books were a big deal.. and of course records of some of her favorite music. Charades was a game that was pretty popular.
