How much food should I cook for 40 people?!

Question:

How much food should I cook for 40 people?

I'm having my family over for my son's first birthday party, about 40 people (Not all adults either). We are having alot of food, but I don't know how much to make for everyone. Should I make 40 servings of each food? I heard I should make enough for 80% of the people? There will be carne asada (meat), rice, beans, salad, and 2 side vegetable dishes. Thanks for your help?

Answers:
Make as much as you can and ask close family members to supplement... the party's more for the family than for the baby, anywhow; babies don't remember their 1st birthdays.

Example: Call mom and ask her to make that awesome (insert dish here) that you love so much... and so on, and so on. Trust me, you don't want to be freaking out over food when your baby will probably start crying after an hour from being overstimulated.

Yes you should.

a 1/4 cup serving size for each quest. I wouldnt go by the 80%. I'd rather have to much then not enough. Your going to have food left over no matter how you plan. Just have some baggies or copntainers for some people to take some home.

I used to be in the catering business. You should make forty servings of the main dish and the salad, and about 75% for all of the rest of the dishes. (cook for thirty) That should do you. Remember it is always better to have too much than not enough. If it is too much send people home with togo plates.

The 80% thing is right. From a family of caterers, I can guarantee you that, if you do enough for everyone, you will have waste. If you want to be fancy, do a little hamper for each kid with a nice bit of salad, a couple of little sandwiches, a slice of pizza and a few strawberries. Then do a big pot of chilli for the adults. A similar hamper was prepared for the Queen's birthday a few years ago at Buck Palace.

If you invite me I can cook
We're going to need to cook one more dish .
With all the mashed potatoes on it .
and salad
and rice&beans
and all... my vegetables..

refired beans corn

i think you should go for having several dishes of everything. Everyone is not going to eat everything. Just offer a variety of things.

My son's first birthday we served just about everything and also had family members bring different dishes as well.

Have fun and remember to take pictures and video tape so he can see it when he gets older.
