Going to the Zoo?!

Question:

Going to the Zoo?

Me, my husband, and three children, who are 5, 7, and 16, are going to the zoo tomorrow. What should I take for us to eat? They have tables and chairs there where you can sit down and eat. They also have a Nathan's there also.

Answers:
Sandwiches are an old stand-by for an event like this, you could even pack in some chips and cheese to round it out (just no mayo - spoils way 2 ez). To make a memorable old-fashioned outing I would recommend (if u have the time); cold fried chicken and a vinegar based cole slaw. Make the fried chicken tonight and put it in the refrigerator. Pack it in a tote with 1 or 2 cold packs (if u don't have a cold pack they are easily made with a ziploc bag filled with water and placed in the freezer overnight). If you don't want to go through the trouble of making your own chicken I've found that KFC extra crispy is pretty good cold.

Here are some recipes to get you started:

Mom's Old Fashioned Fried Chicken

INGREDIENTS
1 (4 pound) chicken, cut into pieces
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
salt and pepper to taste
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup sherry

DIRECTIONS
Put the flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder in a brown paper bag. One by one, coat the chicken parts with mixture.
In a large skillet, fry the chicken in 1 inch of hot oil until golden brown. Remove the chicken from the pan and drain the oil.
Put the chicken back into the pan and cover the pieces with cooking sherry. Cover the pan and reduce to simmer. Let simmer for 20 minutes. Serve.

PB&J usually works best, it's a classic, and everyone with out allergies loves it!

I like taking cheese slices, crackers, and dried fruit on outings with my son. It's not too heavy, covers all the food groups, and it stays good for a while. You can buy something to drink at the zoo.

Anything but leftovers ucould take sandwiches really just anything u and your family love they usually have places where u can buy something But I reccommend sandwiches.

If its hot in your area then take food that can go in sandwich bags. Dry food will never get nasty to eat in the heat. Try mixed nuts, dehydrated barry's, apples, rasins, juices as well will be a great thing to have but not as much as Propel water it will help your kids stay hydrated all day at the Zoo.

I take my kids who are 5 and 7 to the Zoo all the time and well at some point in time their little legs get tired of walking the next best thing is a stroller. I will stop taking one when they dont fit in it anymore. The stroller is also great for the person who has to carry everything around it will save the craby person some streangth for the day. I am normally the one holding everything. Always look at your areas forcast as well just in case later in the day it is going to be a bit colder take what you need for the whole family. When my family goes to the zoo we always let the kids figure out where to go to first so we show the map to the kids and show them where we are and where we will be when we go that way kind of deal it will let the kids feel more grown up and show you think of what they want to do as well. Since I know so much about the animals I can tell my kids everything I have learned in my life and trust me its come in hand more then a few times.

I hope your family has a a great trip its one thing you can give your children that is more education then they get in a whole school year about animals.

mix up some tuna or make egg salad don't put the sandwiches together but take the bread and condiments and bread and put the sandwiches together just before you eat them. I would also take some fruit such as apples and oranges and also cut up some carrots because you will need some snacks. and be sure to take enough water.

I would take easy snacks like 100 calorie snacks or jelly beans. Somethings easy and light to carry. I would eat at Nathan's if I were you. Since you are a mom and most likely no one else will be carrying anything I would think that would make the day more enjoyable to you.
But if you want to make a lunch, I would suggest bring a lunch bag with sandwichs and chip dip. Then bring chips and maybe a little chocolate snack.

Try bringing some potato chips, some dried prunes, slices of peaches, sliced cheese, some fruit juices which are good for your health.
