What is the purpose of a charger? (for table setting purposes)!

Question: What is the purpose of a charger!? (for table setting purposes)
Does it just go under a regular plate to add to the look or does it serve another purpose!? How often do you use them!? Is there anything else you should use as well if you're using charger!? I've never used them before and was wanting to try!. Thanks for any feedback!Www@FoodAQ@Com

You answered your own question!. The other purpose it serves and probably the real one is that so when one accidentally spills or pushes some food off the plate sitting atop the charger it does not soil the table cloth!. Presumably speaking when one uses chargers they often are atop a very nice and expensive table cloth!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

When I looked up 'charger' the dictionary definitions all said it was a large platter!.!.!. therefore it wouldn't go under a plate, it would be used to serve food!. It seems to be an obsolete term though in that sense, because when I looked it up on Wikipedia it had a totally different definition, as a decorative plate holder!.!.!.!. wonder if it evolved from one thing to another!.

Anyways, read the wiki article it actually mentions when to remove the charger during the meal, the etiquette around it etc!. Very pretty! Www@FoodAQ@Com

No purpose except for decoration!. You put it under the dinner plate and it can be used to add a splash of color!. It can make a colorful plate more dramatic or it can make a neutral color more festive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For looks of course but also protects the good linen table clothWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's just for decoration!. They are usually removed once the food is served!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
