Packing for a first picnic ever. it's a date! please help!...?
My boyfriend said we should go on a picnic next day after he comes back from a trip. It's my first time packing on a picnic.
It's already very warm outside, and he wants to take a walk to that park, it's about 20 minutes away, maybe we'll take a walk first. So i need something that would be light and easy to carry, not perishable, and he deserves home made. However, i only will have time to prepare it the day before the picnic.
Also, should i get a basket (if yes, what should it look like?), or can i just throw everything in a backpack?
Please help!!!

If your walking, don't bring a basket it'll just make it difficult to carry and your walk won't be as enjoyable as it could be. Also, don't fuss to much on everything being home-made. I suggest you buy some fried chicken, you can make a pasta salad that doesn't require mayonnaise and something for dessert like big chocolate chip cookies. Maybe make a bottle of home-made lemon-aide or iced tea. Keep plenty of ice in the drink, that will help keep other things cold. If you're driving to the spot, pack a cooler and anything you prepare should be fine when you're ready to eat. Don't forget a nice blanket to sit on and some sturdy paper plates. If you drink you could bring a nice bottle of wine OR buy some "lemon-cello", put a few shots in a glass of raspberry seltzer and you'll have a wonderfully spiked lemon-aide. Most importantly don't forget to have fun, fun, fun. My husband and I are married 25 years now and my fondest memories are of picnics in the park with a bottle of wine and conversation until the wee hours.
A basket would be more romantic. Get one to fit your lunch.
You could make deviled eggs, sandwiches, cheese and crackers and wine, fresh fruit. Finger foods are sexy to eat together.
i would make a salad of some kind like egg, chicken or tuna.
Pack a sleeve of your favorite crackers. Some pickles, maybe some fresh veggies that you can just throw in a zip lock, and some ranch dressing or whatever your favorite it.
Add that w/ a couple of already cold cans of pop or water and then something sweet to eat. If you are going to get a basket, get one that is lined so you can clean it out easily, and if not just throw everything into the back pack. Don't forget a blanket to sit on. Have fun. Enjoy.
That sounds sooo romantic! I think a classic basket is always great for a picnic. A straw one will look real cute, but if you're worried about carting it around, a backback is very practical.
As for food, little triangle sandwiches are really nice to look at and are delicious! Try chicken and mayo, tuna mayo or any other filling he may like. Strawberries and cream are also great as dessert. Take along some choccie bars as well and anything else you would prepare thats easy to make and lightweight. Good luck and have fun!
it depends on how romantic you want it to be. The back pack is less romantic then a regular picnic basket. They have picnic baskets with the plasticware already in them and you can add a bottle of wine, cheese, fruit and one of those rotissere chicken (if you eat meat) and bread the kind from the bakery that you can break and make small sandwiches. You can also add water and/or some type of fruit cups for dessert. Pack a blanket and some place mats with some music and set your own mood. I think that the basket looks a little more classier then the backpack but either would work especially for carrying the wine.
I think a basket is romantic, myself, but if you two are hikers, you might want to invest in one of those packs that also has compartments to store both hot and cold foods! And, let him carry it! Here are some things I've used in the past:
1. Rosemary and lemon marinated grilled chicken
2. Fresh sourdough french bread
3. Cheeses such as brie and gouda
4. New carrots, slender and crisp tender with greens attached
5. Brownies, frosted
6. A nice bottle of wine or sparkling cider
7. Bottled water
Add a cloth tablecloth, napkins, and some silverware, as well as hearty wine goblets, and you've got a romantic date!
make an orzo pasta salad, orzo pasta, celery, red onion grilled shrimp or chicken fresh dill and toss in a mustard vinagrette. Keep cold (great to make before hand!)
Have a white wine chilled and bring some chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. Easy, light and romantic. Dont forget the blanket!
Yes, get a basket. Last year I saw cute ones at Ross and TJ Maxx.
Make salad, grab some cans of soda, make lunchmeat sandwiches and maybe bake up some cookies.
All are easy to make and carry.
