Why are elbows not allowed on the dinner table?!

Question:

Why are elbows not allowed on the dinner table?

Answers:
The very short answer: It's due to the Victorians.

The kinda short answer: It's rude because with your elbows on the table you're not able to use utensils. With your elbows off the table you're more likely to be using utensils.

The long answer: Most modern etiquette rules can be traced back to Vicotorian era, in England. The Victorians are at least partly responsible for many of the "civilized" ideas that we hold today such as using utensils. The Victorians are the first people who actively persued the idea of having to use a fork and knife and not eating directly with your hands. If you have your elbows on the table, it means you're not using utensils and shoving food directly into your mouth. Other "polite things" that the Victorians came up with are: daily showering, brushing one's teeth, politeness, chastity.

Some meanies idea of etiquette! Personally I would like to lounge on big cushions and low tables conveniently accessible. No gluttony! Just luxurious.

most people think its rude

I dunno i guess cause people think its improper

Keeps you from leaning over you plate and allows for more table space.

etiquette, taht you are at the dinner table to eat and not to rest your head on your hand and maybe even go to sleep

a retarded ettiquette rule

it shows lack of interest of company / food.

I have heard from many sources that this idea originated in the middle ages in the UK. Since tables were normally crowded, it was considered bad manners to take up more space on the table with your elbows, taking up real estate from your neighbor. Not all countries abide by this rule, but the US was heavily influenced by the Brits and that tradition was passed on to us today.

well im sorry but i always put my elbows on the table when i pause in eating its compatable and i wouldnt enjoy my food if i didnt

Because my mom said so.

cuz elbows are covered with germs and no one washes their elbows before eating.
