Party games?

Answers:
Here are three free game ideas:

"Human Knot"

1. Everyone stand in a circle facing inward (need group of at least 4 people, really).
2. Everyone put right hand in the middle, and grab the right hand of the someone across from you.
3. Then left hands reach in to grab the left hand of a different person. Do not hold the hand of someone immediately next to you.
4. Untangle yourselves, as a group, back into one open circle, without letting go of hands or dislocating any joints.

"Psychiatrist" (great if the kids know each other well, might be better suited to older children)

1. Send one volunteer out of the room (someone who is willing to ask a lot of questions of everyone). Meanwhile, everyone else sits in a circle.
2. While the volunteer is out of earshot, explain to the remaining players that when volunteer comes back, he/she will choose people and ask them personal questions (e.g. what's your favourite sport? do you have a mobile? do you have any pets? where were you born? who's your favourite teacher? Do you have any sisters? Is it your birthday today?)

3. When answering these questions, players must respond *as if they are the person immediately to their left*. They pretend to be someone else. Sometimes that means guessing or making up the answer. Sometimes you know enough about the person on your left to give a correct answer.

4. If you answer correctly (and the person on your left will know this) then the volunteer may look a little confused (if he wasn't expecting that answer...) and the game continues. If you answered wrong, the person on the left will say, "Psychiatrist!" and everyone gets up and changes seats. The volunteer questioner will look a bit bewildered when this keeps happening.

5. The object of the game (besides being pretty funny) is for the volunteer to work out the rule behind everyone's wrong answers... Let him/her realise something is wrong with the answers and then tell him to work out why some answers are so odd.

See "Party Games" on Wikipedia! There are many variations you can play on this game.

"Wink Murder"

1. Cards such as playing cards are allocated to all players, with one specified card randomly determining the identity of the murderer. (e.g. everyone gets red cards, and ONE person will end up with a black spade). Do not show anyone your cards! Keep your identity secret.

2. All players who are not murderer effectively take on the role of detective, with the objective of correctly identifying and accusing the murderer.

3. Everyone moves around the room, chatting if they like, watching each other, being careful as the "murderer" kills victims by winking at them. If a player makes eye contact with the murderer and he winks, then the player waits for a count of 10 and dramatically "dies", falling to the floor, etc.

4. If another player sees the murderer (and was *not* the one who held eye contact) then he can acuse. "I acuse John!" and John would have to show his card. If wrong (red card), then the false accuser is out of the game along with the victims. If he is right and he catches the murderer, then take a count of how many people were "killed" and then play again.

5. Keep playing as long as you like, and the person who secretly "murders" the most people is the winner.

My wife and I ran a Go! Games kiosk at the mall this last holiday season, so we got to see a bunch of good reviews for all the popular games. One of the somewhat unknown but growing in popularity VERY fast, is called Apples to Apples. It's ages 12 and up, but fun for the entire family. It's a game of comparisons. You just deal the cards, and the players select the card from their hand that they think is best described by a card played by the judge. If the judge picks their card, they win that round. Everyone gets a chance to be the judge. Each round is filled with surprising and outrageous comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things, and events. It's fast moving and refreshing, and great for any get-together with family and friends. You'll love it. We bought it, and our teenagers even want to spend time with us to play it!
