How to seat guests at a small dinner party?
Present will be:
hosts: husband, wife, and teenager
guests: two couples, mother of host wife
Is there a set of rules that can be used to seat them in a formal manner? The table seats one on each end and three on each side.

I think that it really doesn't matter. Is it that formal? if so ends would be you and husband. to your right would be your mom, to your left your teenager, 2 left on each side would be the two couples.
It's really up to you but I like it when husbands and wives are separated. It makes things interesting and helps you to really get to know new people.
I would put the hosts at opposite ends of the table. I would put the teenager in the middle on one of the sides, have the mother of the host on the other middle, and split the two couples so that the husband of one and the wife of the other are across from each other and flank the two hosts.
